Title: A Few Last Moments

Authors notes: Madness, absolute madness two drabbley type fics in one night. I just read a bunch of Qui/Obi type stories and it's made me heartbroken all over again, that they had to end like that. But then, all Apprenticeships end some way, and better a fight in the name of the Force, than fading into obscurity. PS, surprisingly little Obi, but this just how it came out as I wrote.

Summary: The bond between Master and Padawan is a powerful one, and to sever it forcibly will change a Jedi forever. Qui's last moments. Nonslash Master/Apprentice relationship.

Disclaimer: If I were George Lucas, I would have a fuax-hawk. Does George Lucas have a faux-hawk? Qui-Gon would also be alive, and Anakin would be working in a fast food restaurant in Mos Eisley…Sigh I miss Qui… and my grief is making me write irrational disclaimers.

When a Padawan Apprentice took the trials, and was granted the honour of becoming a Knight, the bond between former Master and former Apprentice, would fade to a quiet trace, leaving an ache for what had once been there, and hope for what the future brought. It was an ache Qui-Gon knew from his own Knighthood, and from the Knighthood of his very first Apprentice, long before Obi-Wan, and before even Xantaos. But now, lying here feeling the moments trickle by as his body ceased to function, knowing soon he would be one with the Force, he wondered what would lie in store for Obi-Wan.

He had heard stories of young Padawans, pushed to the brink of madness, at the moment their Master's became one with the Force, when the bond between two souls was snapped so violently, leaving the Youngling open to only an empty blankness.

Of Master's driven to despair – by the loss of a special connection that they had so lovingly nurtured, put so much of themselves into, and ultimately could not protect. It was said a Padawan Apprentice, who became one with the Force, left a Master who would never again complete the circle of training. Who couldn't, in a way their minds were given to that empty blackness too.

It was known to be a pain so overwhelmingly emotional, and spiritual, that it was physical.

What would happen to his Obi-Wan, so close to Knighthood, so nearly prepared to take on the galaxy as a guardian of peace? He hoped that it would be different, that his years of training would protect him from such a pain, that he would accept the loss of his old Master, and continue on. For the first time Qui-Gon despaired of the strength that they had formed in their training bond.

He foresaw Obi-Wan's future in these last moments, as he was held close by the boy, he would be a great Jedi Knight, A great Jedi Master, He would lose himself, and find his destiny all in one terrible day. He would become with the Force – with Qui-Gon. But first he had to feel this loss, if he were to find his way.

Qui-Gon passed into the Force, and in that instant it seemed everything that he was, that he ever had been, was ripped forcibly from the mind and soul of his almost Knighted, Padawan Apprentice, and in that moment Obi-Wan was as a small child again, unable to see beyond the blackness of a bright light that had so long been in him. And although he could do no more than sob for his lost Master, he knew there was still hope for the future, in what Qui-Gon had given him, the knowledge and training, and an Apprentice.
