...
"Rocky," Colt entered their bedroom standing before the addressed, with an award-winning grin plastered to his handsome face. "I need to ask you something."
Rocky spared his brother a glance, then continued doing his homework at the desk.
Taking that as a "Proceed" Colt continued with what he was going to say. "I want you to go on a double date with me tonight."
Having his attention, Rocky gave his brother a look of good-humored scrutiny. He couldn't be serious. How many girlfriends has Colt had since he's hit the age where girls are no longer a trip to the hospital just because they look your way? And he's asking Rocky to double with him? What in the world could be the reason for something so strange to occur?
"Umm..." Rocky began.
"Oh come on, I'd do the same for you." Declared his brother.
Rocky scoffed. "Why resort to threats, I thought you wanted my help?" Getting up from the desk, he moved over to his bed and took a seat. "Colt, before the world splits in two I have to ask why?"
"Because I really like this girl, and" he sits beside his brother on the bed. "you know more about all that sensative junk than I do."
"Yeah, but it's not like you to go for the delicate female species... You like loud girls like Bobbi, and Camille. Who is this girl anyway?"
Sucking in a breath, he knew this moment would come. But he was sort of hoping that Rocky would have already said "yes" that way he could continue the set-up with ease. But lets face it, Rocky used to like her too, he may not wanna help when he finds out.
"Well?"
"It's Jo."
"Jo!? Our Jo? Jo from over that summer with grandpa?" Rocky stands from his seat as if he had to physically move away from the situation. "I didn't know you kept in contact with her."
"We sorta became text buddies."
Rocky hid the brush of momentary hurt that coursed through him over that. He'd of liked to have kept in contact with Jo too. Why didn't he think of that? Or she could have suggested it. Colt watched his brother battle with the green-eyed monster; this is exactly why he wanted the "yes" before telling Rocky who his date was. Colt knew he would be the same if the situation were reversed and it was he who'd found out that Rocky had a date with Jo, and was asking for help. But, thankfully, Rocky proved to be a bigger man than himself and he nodded his answer before sighing in defeat.
"Yeah, yeah I'll double with you." He replied. "But only if I can find a date."
"Yes!" Colt cheered almost missing what his brother had said. Backtracking the reply he asked. "What do you mean? You can have your pick of the litter," He waved a hand out to the general population. "I'm sure any girl would go out with you."
"I'm not in a dating mood," Replied Rocky in a low tone. "And I can't seriel date like you do... I like long term, not one nighters."
"One, don't make dating sound like sex, and two" Getting up from the bed he drops his hands on his brother's shoulders giving him a shake. "This is exactly why I need your help, because you have honor, and say goofy things like 'seriel date'. So come ooonnnn, Rocky, just this one time."
"No. But I do have a substitute who can go in my place."
Brows furrowed, he asked. "Who?"
...
"No chance in any life am I gonna double with Tum tum, I'd rather just screw up the date being a pig."
Tum tum crossed his arms, cheeky grin plastered to his face over the idea of one of his brothers, Colt most of all, needing help from him with girl troubles. "I think you'll want my help, you should listen to Rocky and just take me."
Colt looked from Tum tum to Rocky and back again, slowly shaking his head he backs away from them doing a good immitation of Rocky wanting to flee the scene of his going out with Jo. "I've seen you with Paige, Tum. You're both nuts. And she's hardly as lady-like as Jo."
"Hey, Paige is very lady-like... The other day at lunch she gave me her chicken drumstick in the cafeteria." Pointing a finger at his brother to drive the point home, he adds. "Only real ladies wanna feed their man."
Blinking, Colt looked to Rocky and asked. "Is that true?"
Rocky shook his head thoughtfully. "I have no idea. I've never had a girl feed me before... except one time during a picnic so maybe giving up food is the same as that- at least in a thirteen year old's world."
"Think about it." Tum tum goes on, growing smugger by the second. "How many girls would you share a drink from? Not many. How many girl's hands would you trust to give you food or put it in your mouth?"
Rocky nodded while thinking it over. "I'm proud to say it, he's right."
"I hate to agree with it, but you make a lot of sense."
"Told ya. Ever since Paige" Tum tum slipped his hands behind his head, leaning back agains the couch. "I've become a real man. I completely understand women."
"Don't get ahead of yourself, Tum." Rocky quiped. "Paige really is nuts, but she and you are a good example of a normal couple... at least in comparison to Colt."
"I heard that." He crossed his arms, a pissed look stapled itself to his face.
"So, when you go on this date, make sure Paige knows you're setting an example."
Tum tum held up a hand telling his brother that he understood. "I've been meaning to ask about that, who's so great you're willing to go all "Rocky" on her?"
Rocky rolled his eyes at the intended insult of his character, but let Colt reply to that answer as he walked back to their room. He's got homework to finish.
"It's Jo Lukata."
"Who?"
"Jo! Jo, Jo... The only Jo we know, Tum. Don't be a pea brain."
"Wow... I didn't know you were still talking to her." He scoots over to allow his brother to sit beside him on the couch. "Is she coming here?"
"Yeah. Her Dad's bringing her for a visit... Hopefully he doesn't know about the date."
Tum tum chuckled. "You think he's team Rocky?"
"Wouldn't you be?"
Tum tum gave a nod with a humored look on his face over the fact that he didn't need to ask the question, he just wanted to hear Colt admit that Rocky has him beat for once. Colt always gets the girl in the battle of "Who does she like more, Rocky or Colt?". So it's nice to see Rocky in the lead at least once in a while.
"But he can't disapprove of you too much, he doesn't know what you're like when you're dating." Explained the younger boy. "To him, you're a radical guy who helped him and his daughter out."
"I never thought of it that way." He grinned in wonderment over how he could get so lucky. "Maybe you're not as immature as you look and behave."
"Thanks... I think."
"Well, be ready by seven tonight okay?" Getting up from the couch he makes for the downstairs bathroom to shower. "And call Paige, tell her to behave." He closed the door when seeing a thumbs up in response.
Colt had to let himself be hopeful. If they can pull it off, that night was going be great!
And that is was the conversation Jessica Douglas overheard that began her assessment of her sons. She'd been in the kitchen looking over contracts while having a cup of coffee when the quiet in the house was disrupted by her sons erupting chatter in the living room. It left her in thoughtful observance of them as the week went on.
Jessica can still remember them as babies crawling around and getting into everything, but now they're cresting into youngmen. No longer interested in avoiding girls to escape the risk of cooties, they're now picking types of girls that suit their personal interest and lifestyle. Take Rocky for instance.. He tends to steer towards quiet, poised girls, who compliment his own poised calm. She can remember specifically Almandra Chacon. A pretty Hispanic girl with big hazel eyes, a crooked shy smile, with a sweet voice.
It was over the fall that the young lady came into notice of the whole family, when while they ate dinner Rocky asked if she could go along with them to the amusement park. The Douglas family traditionally does this during the last week of summer. The boys are home from their grandfather's, and their father's work load is light enough for time off.
"Say mom," Rocky began, casually picking at his dinner of beef yock with his fork. "would it be alright if I brought a friend along with us to the park tomorrow?"
Colt and Tum tum exchanged humored glances at the use of the word "friend" when Rocky clearly meant "girlfriend". Why it was so hard for his brother to express he has feelings for someone beyond himself and that person they'd never know. Although Tum tum could kind of understand, since girls still held the gross-as-anything factor to him.
"Oh, of course." Jessica replied. "What's his name?"
Colt literally had to poke himself in the thumb with his fork to not bust out laughing at how awkward Rocky could make a simple situation. Tum tum rolled his eyes in dismay.
"Her name is Almandra."
"Oh." Jessica's brows rose.
Though in all honesty it was not in surprise of Rocky having female friends because he's sincerely got quite a few. A kind boy is catnip to the female species who sometimes believe that friendship would blossom into more later on in the years when girls become something more to boys than the softer side of humanity. Emily's unrequited feelings were show of that. But the way her son examined his food to avoid eye contact professed this Almandra was a little more than a friend.
Sam, not as tactful as his wife, set his glass down and commented openly. "I didn't know you were seeing anyone, Samuel."
A little embarrassed Rocky replied. "Yeah." He knew he'd been found out, so it sort of eased the uncomfortable blow of having to say it himself. "We met over winter break at the hill everybody sleds on."
"Isn't that sweet?" She smiled at her son. "I look forward to meeting her."
"Yeah, she's great."
And as Jessica can recall Almandra was great. Rocky held her hand most of the day, taking her around with him and soothing her fears about getting on any ride that wasn't simply a track of straight line. Watching Rocky experiencing romances was wonderful. Jessica was always curious what happened that caused her sweet son to end up single again? But she'd never ask. And he'd undoubtedly be uncomfortable telling her. Though, it's likely Rocky and whomever the girl was at the time broke up amiccably because she'd occassionally see them hanging around or talking to each other.
Colt was another story. Jessica always felt guilty whenever Colt said he was seeing someone, until she realized that her mischievous son tended to thankfully steer towards girls with his level of relationship maturity. Meaning dating plenty and dating often. Though unlike Rocky Colt doesn't remain verbally friendly with these girls. They aren't fighting, but they aren't speaking either. She can remember a girl named Bobbi, she never knew any of the last names of Colt's girlfriends, the door revolved a bit too much. But she remembers Bobbi.
It was a Wednesday over spring break when she'd first encountered the outspoken girl. Her dyed red hair with showing black roots was item number two that came to Jessica's attention. Item number one was the girl going after her son's neck after tapping it with an ice cream sandwich. She had no idea Colt was so amorous. At least he wasn't without a hint of embarrassment, because when Jessica cleared her throat to reveal she'd entered the kitchen, Colt moved away from the girl.
"Hey mom, this is Bobbi."
Bobbi wriggled her fingers as a greeting. She looked a bit embarrassed, though not enough to not shoot Colt a look that asked that he make his mother vanish. Bobbi was dressed rather cutely considering her personality. She wore a pinstriped button-down with a tie, and a tight black jean skirt that went to her knees to give it a more casual look. Jessica admitted to herself if she had a daughter she'd like her fashion sense to be something similar.
"I've heard a lot about you," Jessica set the groceries on the island counter. "It's nice to finally have a face to the name."
There was the difference between Rocky and Colt. Rocky wanted the utmost privacy until he was comfortable with the idea of being teased. Colt shouted to anyone who'd listen. Frankly, he seemed to like silently boasting the body count to his brother, who liked to date at his own pace.
Bobbi was a mess. She swore. She stole. And she was seeing two other boys at school along with Colt. A girl like that shouldn't have a place in any of her son's lives, whether they're into the type or not. Colt romances an ache that has Jessica feeling like he'll never settle down. But, his asking for dating advice to go out with Jo... things may be looking up.
Tum tum... His only girlfriend has been Paige since the first day she'd slugged him to present. Tum tum seems to suffer a girl's company when that girl has a personality like a boy. People who have romance at a young age often have love this way. Jessica has seen Paige and her son have a ball together most days, only to argue like savages the next. Their spats would always end with both of them poised to backhand the other. It was adorable and alarming in some ways. Jessica would never want to imagine her son would actually hit the girl, no matter how she behaved. But she was sure he never would.
Sometimes Tum tum would have a sweet, goofy look on his face whenever he'd get off the phone with her like the world was and would always be a beautiful place thanks to Paige. Jessica wondered if her sons would ever find the girl they're going to marry? She knew one thing, though. She was rooting for Colt's date with Jo to go well.
