"Bard"

By Terzaphine

Summary: Decades after our beloved heroes, when all that was left in the realm were the ledgends, a young girl comes of age of knighthood. Forced along the path of the aforementioned heroes, this girl's only wish is to be normal. Well….as normal as anyone can get in Tortall.

Disclaimer: really, I find these pointless, because if you haven't realized, TP anything doesn't belong to you either (nyah nyah) and you have no right to pretend to sue or anything. BUT I do have to give credit to Lady Silvamord for letting me mention her character Elissar.

A/N: the prologue is very factual and boring I think, but necessary. A lot of names. PLEASE bear with me, I promise that everything gets wayyyy better---its only a prologue.

Please review!

The Kingdom of Tortall

During the Thirty-fourth year of the reign of King Roald II and Queen Shinkokami

The time of heroes had come to an end in Tortall.

The Eastern Lands–with the exception of renegades, bandits, raiders, and immortals–were in peace.

In the last days of the reign of Jonathan IV and Thayet the Peerless, Tortall and it's surrounding countries created a colossal truce, and formed the still-standing G.U.E.L. Great Union of the Eastern Lands—G.U. for short.

Alanna the Lioness had passed into the Black God's domain, as did Sir Raoul the Giantkiller, Black Robe Mage Numair Salmalìn, The Wildmage Daine Sarrasri, The Old King, Jonathan IV and Queen Thayet, Prime Minister Gareth the Younger of Naxen, Hidden Spymaster the Whisper Man, Not-so-hidden Spymaster Sir Myles of Olau, Buriram Tourakom, and foreign Emperor Kaddar and Empress Kalasin Illiniat.

These people remain only in ledgend.

Another generation of heroes– Lady Knight Sir Keladry of Mindelan, Sir Nealan of Queenscove, Merric of Hollyrose, Commander Domitan of Masbolle, Owen of Jesslaw (now retired Training Master of Squires and Pages) and the Copper Isles' King Tejinder and Queen Dovasary of the ancient Haiming Line– were much older with children and families…some failing in health.

Tortall was now governed by middle-aged Roald and Shinkokami, soon planning to pass the throne to their son Prince Kanakiro and his wife. Our good friend Sir Nealan of Queenscove had long since passed the position of Chief Healer to his second born son, Hakaru Kekoa Nealon. (Neal was rather enthusiastic in the naming of his children)

Carthak now had Emperor Elissar and Empress Gerardine Illiniat on the throne, and the Copper Isles were now ruled by Queen Cheanolende. The Yamani Isles remained aloof as always, though their ties to Tortall continued in loyalty in respect for the marriage that allied them. Scanra also stayed the same, switching kings every few weeks, and Galla, Tusaine, Saren, Maren, and Tyra were joined with Tortall in the Great Union.

The Disputed Rank of Lady Knight held only by the Lioness and the Protector of the Small, now included Kaida Li-Dai Keilani Neallan of Queenscove (oh, Neal), Irilane of Masbolle, Pathoma of Golden Lake and Malorie's Peak, Felenia Chelensra of Cria, and Diyenamal of Blue Harbor.

And in a cosseted little fief called Montaione, near Pearlmouth, a ten year old girl was being dragged from her home to try for a shield.
