When I was a small boy, I never believed in anything past what I could see.
The only things that were real were the dirt under my feet, the food in my belly and the roof over my head. My family was real. My father, my sisters, my mother.
After I was taken to be a knight, there were other things - enemies and women and friends. Friends that made you proud to ride beside them. And die beside them. Friends that had their own things to believe in.
Galahad and Gawain - they believe in each other. Galahad himself believes in a life away from Rome, free from killing and obedience to a cause not his own. Gawain believes in Galahad, and so they have a life they see for themselves.
Bors believes in his family - all of his 'little bastards' and Vanora. Even if he says different, all of us know where his heart rests.
Tristan - he believes in loyalty and blood and what he must do to get through in one piece. Feelings less tangible than the rest, a sort of rightness that comes in the moment of death. Yes, above all, Tristan believesin death.
And Arthur...
Arthur believes in freedom and truth and justice. He has faith beyond measure in a world where everyone is equal and no one is afraid. He believes that people can change. He sees things that may never come to pass, though he will always strive to make them so.
This may be my last day. I have a feeling, an ache that I can't ignore. But even so, I still can't put my trust in things that I can't reach out and grasp.
But I do believe...I do believe in Arthur.
