A/N: I've just recently finished Merlin, and I can't get over it. It doesn't happen to me very often that I cry on books or movies, but this was the saddest series finale I have ever seen. It technically broke my heart, and I was crying for more than an hour during and after watching this episode, so I had to come up with a story to comfort myself.

Disclaimer: I don't own this series, I'm just playing with the characters ;)

Prologue

Merlin stood in the shallow water watching as the small boat slowly disappeared in the mist that surrounded the island of Avalon. He still couldn't believe that his friend was gone and won't return to him anymore. He didn't really know what he was waiting for, but he couldn't bring himself to turn around and walk away. Part of his heart still hoped that Arthur will emerge from the mist with that smirk on his face he always wore when scored a victory.

But only the realization came that he remained alone. It felt like a part of him was ripped off. His soul ached so much, it caused physical pain. During those long years they became much more than just a master and his servant, even more than just friends, they were two halves of a whole. They have spent so much time together, they knew each other more than anyone else.

Except his magic. It hurt him so much, that he couldn't tell Arthur earlier, he always felt that he was lying to his best friend. But when he finally confessed Arthur accepted it. However it took some time but at the end his friend understood that all he had done was for him. Yet again it proved the strength of their friendship that Arthur could forgive him despite all of his mistrust in magic. Merlin hoped that it would be the start of a new era, when there will be no secrets between them, when he doesn't have to hide anything, and he knew that it would strengthen their bond even more. But now the promise of this new era was nothing more than a faint dream which was already slipping away from him like dust in the wind.

He remembered their time together and couldn't believe that it was taken away from him. He would give anything to get it back, to see his face again, to talk to him. He would even welcome Arthur's mocking just to hear his voice again or gladly go on a patrol just to be in his company. But it's not possible anymore. They were so close to succeed, they almost made it to Avalon, but now his dreams were as unreachable as the stars in the sky.

It seemed that his tears will never stop falling. The night came and went, and he started to grow really cold in the water, but he didn't care at all. He stood there until his body gave up and he fell on his knees. He crawled to the shore and lay down. Day came after day, but with Arthur gone nothing really mattered to him anymore. He fulfilled his destiny, they finally brought peace to Albion, but he still felt that he failed. He couldn't save his dearest friend and without him there's no point living in this world anymore. He felt his strength slowly leaving him, and knew that death is near. So he closed his eyes awaiting the moment when he will step into that other world where Arthur was waiting for him.
