Prologue

The sun had long set and nocturnal wildlife had taken over the Great Forest. It was the middle of Spring, and so the slight breeze that blew the canopy was cool.

Interrupting the calm of the forest was a horrible sound. It grated on the nerves as if a thousand metal nails on a chalkboard. It wasn't a continuous noise; it stopped and started again as if something was breathing between screams. Creaking of metal parts could be heard in the pause before the next scream, as well as sparking wires and dripping liquid.

All of these sounds could belong to only one entity: a robot. Not just any type of robot though, one of the rare few Metal series. They were the only robots –created by Dr. Robotnik, the evil dictator of Robotropolis himself- who could feel pain. He claimed it was to help them understand their targets better, but everyone knew it was because he enjoyed the anguish of others. If he wanted a robot only world, who would feel pain? So he built robots that could feel.

This would come to bite Robotnik in the ass later, but I digress.

After three agonizing hours, the screams finally stopped and soft whimpers took their place. Shortly after they began, they ended and soft breathing could be heard if one was close enough.

In the middle of scraps of metal, a puddle of motor oil, and ripped wires laid a small black furred baby hedgehog. Its red eyes seemed to glow in the dark of the forest canopy before it closed them and fell asleep, the trauma of the last few hours getting the best of it.

The next morning, the little kit was awakened by a sonic boom. Jerking in fear, the kit gave a short cry and curled into a tight ball on instinct. The cry attracted the blue streak that had created the boom and it swerved to the clearing. Once stopped, it became obvious that the blur was actually a blue hedgehog. Looking around, he searched for the origin of the cry. Finally glancing down, the hedgehog noticed the trembling black ball of fluff.

"Aw. Are you okay little guy?" the blue one asked as he bent down to collect the baby hedgehog. A frightened whimper was his answer as he held the little thing to his chest.

"It's alright, I won't hurt you," he cooed, attempting to get the little guy to uncurl. Slowly, with plenty of encouragement from the blue hedgehog, the little black one uncurled and glanced up at the older hedgie.

"Ba?" it squeaked inquisitively, its bright crimson eyes gazing into the blue one's emerald.

The blue one smiled. "That's right little guy, I won't hurt you."

Looking around at the ruined robot parts, the blue hedgehog got an uneasy feeling. "Let's get out of here before whatever did this comes back."

Gripping the kit more firmly, he rocketed off further into the forest, though nowhere near as fast as he had upon entry.

He was long gone by the time the evil laughter made its way to the clearing.
