A/N: Something short I found in my documents. I liked it though, and I felt like I needed to post something before the month was over, so— enjoy!

Disclaimer: Silly readers, Code Geass is for Sunrise!

As much as he hates it, he watches her for any flash of recognition. A memory she shouldn't have, a reminiscence, a reference to 'old times'. He doesn't want to. Or, at least, he shouldn't want to want her to remember. But he does, damn sense and safety. Because Lelouch should be dead to him, to her, to the world. It's not fair to either of them to drag her along, keeping up his hopes and her fantasies. All she ever wanted was him, the truth of him, and it was the one thing he couldn't give.

But all men want what they can't have, what they shouldn't desire, he decided as he held her close and smelt rain and perfume, as he struggled not to clutch too hard and let her become his anchor.

(And it was all men's downfall, but he remembered that later.)
