Crystal sheets of rain hung from the sky as Alanna waited in the muddy brown streets. She hugged herself against the cold, furious that George was making her wait for the letter from her brother.

"I should go give him a piece of my mind," Alanna thought as a cart went by and splashed her with mud, making her melt into the murky, colorless world she was standing in.

George was suddenly before her, eyes hazel and alive. The letter was white parchment, unaffected by the stains of life. There was a red seal, bright as her hair, which seemed to glow like a candle in the shadows of the street.

Then George was gone, as quickly as he came, and the colors streamed in his wake until they too, were muted by the world.
