A/n I'm very excited for the premier of Castle in a few weeks. This is just something I whipped up today after seeing a trailer for the preview. Please enjoy, it's a little one shot with heavy spoilers for last season's finale.
The Twist
It was supposed to be over. She was supposed to be safe. He knew it like he knew his beloved Alexis would always love him. It was supposed to be over. Except… He forgot the one steadfast and unbreakable rule of any good mystery novel, any thriller, or horror movie. The Twist! He forgot about the twist.
When the light winked off the reflective surface of the riflescope, he felt his brain seize up and stutter like an old car engine. He hesitated just long enough for the person aiming the high-powered rifle to shatter his world.
He just wasn't expecting it. The mystery was over. It had followed all the major rules of a good mystery. He should know. Mysteries were his stock in trade. They were his life, his passion, his bread and butter, until he met Kate and his life changed forever.
He was cold. There in the light of the afternoon sun, he was so cold. It was as though someone had poured ice water into his stomach and it was making it's way down his legs and arm and out though his toes and fingers. He shivered in time with Kate as held her in his arms and willed her to stay with him.
Perhaps their shared agony blinded him to the truth. He had liked Captain Montgomery very much and had never seen the betrayal coming. The number one rule of mystery and murder was that 99 percent of the time, it was the person you least suspected. Captain Montgomery had proved that rule.
It was supposed to be over. They'd had their red herring, they'd found the answer at the end of the trail even though it killed them both to know it was one of their own. This was the part of the story rarely seen. It was what came after.
She was supposed to be safe because it was over. He forgot the most important thing. The twist. It wasn't over, somehow they'd missed it. It was like they were trapped in a horror movie when the unstoppable monster popped up for one last attack on the unsuspecting victims who thought they were finally safe.
He should have known better. Now his hands were covered in her blood and her eyes were losing their focus as she looked up at him. "I love you." He said and shame claimed him for its own because he shouldn't have left it until this moment.
It was the perfect cliffhanger. The reluctant hero in his tarnished armor tells the beautiful damsel in distress that he loves her just before she closes her eyes forever. It was so cliché, he nearly screamed in frustration. Tears, the first he'd cried in years, dropped onto the front of her blood soaked uniform.
It was supposed to be over. She was supposed to be safe. Funny… He couldn't think of a single way to write a happy ending this time.
