Missing scene to AHBL2

Sam is breathing. He fell asleep in the front seat of the Impala, head on his arm against the window on the not-long-enough drive from Cold Oak to Bobby's. I want him to eat more, sleep more, heal more. When he changed his clothes I saw the fresh scar of the fresh knife wound through his spine and I just wanted him to stop and rest but he wanted to get on the road. I wanted him to get more sleep. I wanted to sit next to the bed and listen to him breathe while he slept and he healed. But Sam wants to go, so we go.

He didn't ask, he didn't question how he was still alive. He just took my word for it and that was it. I found a basin and brought him some water to wash up because death does nasty things to a body and him being clean was something I needed.

I brought him clean clothes and he changed his bloody shirts and his muddy pants and I had to help him because his back still hurt so much. I pulled his boots off before he changed and put them back on after he was done. I heard him hold his breath in pain when the shirts came off and let it out in relief when the clean ones were on.

I packed up the soda pop and the rest of the pizza for the trip. I took his arm to walk to the car because at least one of us needed it. He settled into the front seat and didn't want any support for his back because he thought it would hurt pressing against the wound. Then we did what Sam wanted; we got on the road.

It didn't take long for him to fall asleep, it never does in the car. The road lulls him. I pull my jacket from the back seat and get it to stay over his shoulders without disturbing him. Once he's asleep I slow down. I'm not anxious to get to Bobby's. I can imagine his reaction when I show up with Sam. Anger, rage, he'll probably rip me a new one.

Whatever it is, it's worth it.

Because Sam is breathing.

The End.
