The basketball boys put in Kelsi's locker combination and began to open the doork. It was Kelsi's birthday and they were going to fill her locker with balloons.

The door was opened completely, and the boys stared into the small space. The locker door was completely covered in pictures; pictures from the musicals, from basketball games, and from various group things they'd had. Jason laughed at the picture of the boys from the karaoke night at Kelsi's house a few months before. Chad's face was screwed up in concentration, while Ryan was throwing in some dance moves. Who knew the five boys could pull off a Backstreet Boys song so well?

The top shelf of the locker had a container of Zeke's special macadamia nut cookies that Kelsi loved, and a note that Gabriella had passed her during class sat folded up next to it.

Ryan's grey fedora was hanging on a hook, along with the jacket Chad had loaned her when the two had gotten stuck in the rain. Jason's jersey was on the other hook; he'd given it to Kelsi after they'd won the last game of the season.

A few binders were stacked on the bottom of the locker, and Troy spied Taylor's biology notes sticking out of one, and several blank music sheets and a Broadway mix CD from Sharpay sticking out from another. Troy's script for the fall play sat on top of the binders, and Troy remembered leaving it at her house when she had been helping him with his lines.

The four boys looked at each other; Kelsi's locker was a shrine to her friends. It had pieces of all of them in it. That was how Kelsi was; she put up with Chad showing her how to play basketball, and she helped Troy with his lines and songs. Jason would tell her jokes, and Kelsi would spend Sunday mornings with Zeke, taste testing all his new creations. Gabriella and Taylor would help her study, and Sharpay would take her shopping. Kelsi and Ryan would borrow each other's hats, and they would sing in the car when he'd drop her off from rehearsals.

The boys filled the locker with balloons, each realizing they were loved. Loved by a girl who wanted nothing but friendship in return and whom they cared about more than they'd realized until that moment.

When Kelsi opened her locker that morning, balloons spilling into the hallway, and saw the boys grinning at her from across the hall, she ran over and threw her arms around them. Each boy pulled her into a tight hug, and kissed her cheek, silently letting her know that they loved her back.
