You got a fast car; I want a ticket to anywhere.
Sat in her bedroom, listening to yet another blazing argument, Jade West never really heard anything different. Daddy drowned his sorrows in whatever alcohol the store had in stock and mom, well you tell her.
He sits in his room, waiting for a day that never comes. He's on his own, trying to find his place in this world. If only his parents would come back. If only they could come back.
He sees her in the corridor, and they talk. He vents, she listens. It all pours out of her, one day too. He makes a proposal, and she accepts. So they get in his car and they drive, drive far.
Maybe we make a deal - maybe together we can get somewhere.
So that's what they did, with his yellow Ferrari and her street smarts, they drove away, far away. She knew what they were doing, and she loved it. So did he.
"Any place is better; starting from zero got nothing to lose. Maybe we'll make something but me myself I got nothing to prove," She said.
They never went far, always came back at the end of the day. They wouldn't have it any other way. That's just the way it was.
Daddy stopped working, and Jade had a lot of work to do. She got a job in a shop and carried on as normal.
I been working at the convenience store managed to save just a little bit of money.
It wasn't a good pay, she wasn't treated like a queen there. But he was near, not far. And she needed him to keep her strong, keep her lousy after school job. To drive her there, get her out of the house for a while. To treat her like a real princess, because before that happened, he was raised by a queen. And if you're raised by a queen, you'll treat her like a princess. That's just the way it works.
She didn't feel much like a princess. Especially when she told her prince what had happened at home that afternoon.
"You see my old man's got a problem he lives with the bottle that's the way it is. He says his body's too old for working,"
Her mother went off and left him after months.
I said somebody's got to take care of him. So I quit school and that's what I did
He missed her at school, every day alone. He saw her after school, though. Drove her to her job and back again, sometimes back to his. Slowly but surely they were falling. Finally falling.
She was clever, smart and bright. She didn't need school anymore, not really. Sixteen is old enough to look after yourself, isn't it? Not old enough to look after everyone else, though. She was independent and fierce, however. Persevered and made sure everyone had food on their plates. The truth was simple. She wasn't being nice for the sake of it, no. Jade West wasn't renowned for being nice at all. Jade did it because she loved them. Not that she'd admit it, because face it. Everyone you love will eventually leave you. They all do, just wait. Lean back and watch.
Beck knew what it did to her, and she became more and more tired. He gave her options, and she knew they were true.
We gotta make a decision; we leave tonight or live and die this way.
And as she lied down that night to go to sleep she recalled all the memories that had brought her today.
He'd brought her there. She'd remembered her parents, and she never wanted to end up like that.
I remember we were driving, driving in your car the speed so fast I felt like I was drunk.
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder.
"We've got to go," Beck says, pulling out the dusty suitcase. "Make a decision, Jade."
You got a fast car; I want a ticket to anywhere.
They drove, and drove. Had nowhere to go, and nowhere to be. But they still drove. Jade didn't even think of her future anymore. He never thought of the past. Together, driving in that car, they felt complete.
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone.
