People tend to forget that Black Star was born a killer. He was born from a clan of assassins, a clan gone insane and drunk on bloodlust. They forget that Sid was the one to train him, and Sid would never have gone easy on him, never would've let him off if Black Star didn't fulfill his expectations.

Death the Kid has never forgotten, and hates himself for it, because Black Star is the one to suffer for it.

But the Crona has left Death City and Kid paranoid, and Kid's feelings are less important than the safety of his people.

So Kid swallows his morals, his feelings, and orders Black Star to track down and slaughter any and all potential Kishin.

In other words, Kid is ordering him to commit murders, since these people are simply humans who have commit severe crimes, just teetering on the edge of becoming Kishin.

Black Star never protested. Not even during the first time, and he had simply inclined his head slightly as if he was used to it.

(Perhaps he is. Perhaps he had been used in the same way now in the past. Kid hates it.)

Black Star never brings Tsubaki with him, and when Kid had asked, Black Star had smiled bitterly and said he would never taint Tsubaki's blade to commit a murder.

Now, Kid is curled up on his bed, weary and waiting for Black Star to enter.

A light rap on the window, and Kid rolls off the bed, opening the window. Black Star slides through the window, looking exhausted as Kid is of this.

Kid ignores the blood staining Black Star's dark clothes and bandaged hands, pulling him into bed and buries his face into Black Star's hair. Right now, nothing matters except this. Symmetry is trivial. He doesn't care if the sheets get dirty.

"I'm so sorry," Kid whispers. "I'm so, so sorry." I'm so, so sorry for condemning you to such a fate.

Kid feels Black Star smile slightly into his neck. It's a small smile, nothing like his trademark wide grin, and he can practically feel the bitterness rolling off of Black Star in waves. "There's nothing to be sorry for, you idiot," Black Star mumbles.

"It's my fault," Kid murmurs. "You shouldn't have to do this. Not after… not after Mifune."

"It's not your fault," Black Star chides. "It's not your fault this is what I am."

"You're human, Black Star."

"Yes, I am," Black Star agrees. "A human who has surpassed god, yes?" He laughs slightly, though it's just so fake that Kid wants to puke.

"Go to sleep. Humans need sleep." Kid's voice is lighter than he actually feels.

"Yes, o Shinigami-sama," Black Star teases, a sleepy lilt to his tone, and eventually his breath evens out into sleep.

And only now does Kid let himself weep.
