Summary: Falling doesn't always wake you up, Arthur muses. Sometimes, falling only makes you go deeper. This was inspired by the song 'Parachute' by Cheryl Cole. On an unrelated note, I think the guy in the music video kind of looks like Leonardo DiCaprio.

I don't own inception or Cheryl Cole/Parachute

In his profession, falling was what typically brought you out of a dream. You fell down to be woken up, to bring your consciousness back to reality.

Arthur didn't feel like he was falling so much as he was being tossed back and forth. In his dreams he was in control, composed, nothing could deter him. Then however, he would rise back into reality, where the new architect would begin affecting him again.

After their first meeting, when he had told Cobb that she would come back, it was because he needed to instill the belief in himself. He had never seen a potential employee walk away, but Ariadne had seen firsthand what dreams could do to people.

But then she reappeared at the warehouse and his relief was so prevalent that when he greeted her the smile reached his eyes. Dom noticed this, and Arthur noticed when he noticed (he had always been better at understanding other people that understanding himself). From that point onward, Arthur tried to keep his feelings in check; and he would have succeeded, but for this development. It was, to put it blatantly, unacceptable.

Cobb had let Ariadne come into the dream with them, knowing the elevated risks, and Arthur loathed him for it. He knew that if she felt it would help, she would travel into limbo, tagging along at Dom's heels like a faithful puppy, disregarding any threats, and entirely too trusting. What Ariadne didn't know (The point man could barley admit it to himself) was that Arthur was the puppy who tagged along at her heels. And it killed him that he couldn't follow her down, past the second level of the dream. He liked to be in control (hence the loaded die as a totem), and the fact that she was taking that control away from him was more frightening than any glaring projection.

"It was worth a shot."

Except that wasn't why he had done it. The pitiful excuse had been as much for him as it had been for her. Even if it hadn't been worth it, Arthur still would have asked her to kiss him. He needed something to hang on to, lest the next time he saw her, she had aged far beyond him.

And now, getting ready to blast the suspended elevator down twelve stories, Arthur was falling up. The kick would bring him into reality and he would see Ariadne's face again. He knew his actions in the dream would have consequences, but he was past fighting the sense of falling. He was plummeting deeper and upward, in and out, rising out of the layers of the dream, and falling profoundly in love with Ariadne.

I won't fall out of love
