IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT

March 20, 2001

Scully's residence

3:21 am

And so she remained at the window of her living room. The curtain brushed slightly against the right side of her face. Her eyes had been fixed on the thick rain that had started to fall on the completely deserted street about thirty minutes ago. The darkness was heavy. Silence reigned, only interrupted by heavy sound of the raindrops banging against the glass windows. And she had a smile on her lips and a light of true happiness on her eyes.

As if she had woken up from her trance, she held both hands on the bottom of her back and she dragged herself to the sofa. She switched on the small lamp next to her and arranged the pillows. She took a deep breath. The burden she had carried on her chest for the past few months was finally gone. She wondered until when! Life experience had already taught her not to celebrate the good things in life – something bad was always waiting to happen and take all the joy away.

But, at least tonight, she would enjoy her luck. Even if she was all alone!

A rough movement on her belly seemed to disagree with her thoughts. She smiled and her hand rested on her bump.

- Yes, okay! – she agreed in a whisper. – I know I'm not alone!

She felt another kick at the same spot where she rested her hand. For her, it was just another proof of how her baby knew exactly what she was thinking. She lifted her head, put her chin to her chest and tenderly caressed her seven months belly.

- We should commemorate tonight! – her voice flew between her lips like a simple murmur, soft and sweet as sugar. – We should have a party! Today, something amazing happened, something unimaginable… Today, daddy returned home. Today, he returned to us!

A new movement made her believe that the baby was listening to all of her words.

- I know you haven't met him yet, but you will soon! His head will fly to the clouds… - she let a smile run to her lips while she was imagining that moment. – I'm sorry that he's not here tonight but he felt a little sick when I was with him last time. But soon… yes, soon both of us will be right here talking to you!

The heavy rain against the windows cut the silence between the four walls, but it didn't interfere with the attention she dedicated to the child that was growing inside her, like a miracle. For her, only two people were in there that precise moment: the woman with a new hope on her heart and the result of her faith conjugated with the most beautiful of all feelings.

She smiled once again – she couldn't stop smiling – and she laid down carefully on the pillows of the couch. Her hand couldn't stop caressing her belly. She couldn't stop thinking that her baby was in there, accompanying her on every second of her lonely existence. Until that night, that child was the only thing who kept her alive. From now on, it was the completion of a circle for which she was waiting for so long ago. A family… a true, loving family.

- Soon… - Scully murmured, turning off the small lamp. No matter what, she knew that in some nights she would have someone else next to her to caress her body, singing lullabies at the same time with her. – Soon, really soon!
