Johanna had a huge smile on her face, as she watched Katniss nervously unwrapped her present. Under the wrapping paper was a white box. Katniss paused before opening it. In her mind she was thinking how she was going to react. Katniss took a deep breath and opened the box. "Wow, you got me arrows."
"I know how you like to hunt," said Johanna.
"I guess I could use those for hunting." Katniss inspected the arrows. They weren't that bad. Aside from not being aerodynamic, Katniss could see herself using these, assuming she had run out of everything else. "I think these work better for decoration, you know?"
"I don't really know that much about arrows." Johanna's smile began to disappear.
Katniss put the arrows on her table. "What did the guy who sold you these say?"
"Uh, I kinda made these myself." Johanna bit her lip.
"Really," said Katniss.
"Yeah," said Johanna. "I made the arrowheads using an axe I broke."
"That's kinda poetic I guess," said Katniss.
The smile returned to Johanna's face. "That's exactly what I was thinking."
"Well, I'll be sure to use these the next time I go hunting," said Katniss.
"You're in luck," said Johanna. "I saw a flock of turkeys just a few miles away. We could go hunt them."
"Those turkeys should be gone by now," said Katniss.
"I see." Johanna's smile disappeared again. "I don't know that much about turkeys."
"We could still go hunting." Katniss picked up the arrows. "Maybe a few are still there."
"Great," said Johanna.
Johanna showed Katniss where she saw the turkeys. There were still a few of them hanging around.
"See," said Johanna.
"Shhh." Katniss reached for an arrow. "You don't want to startle them."
"Right." Johanna zipped her lips.
Katniss loaded the arrow into her bow and aimed it at the largest turkey she could see. Once the turkey in her sights, she let the arrow loose. The arrow flew through the air, and for a moment Katniss thought that it would actually hit the turkey. Then the arrow took a nosedive to the ground, about ten feet away from the turkey. The flock scattered as it hit.
"Oops," said Johanna.
"It's okay," said Katniss.
After a while, a turkey returned to the field and began pecking at the arrow.
"Give me another arrow," said Katniss. "I think I can adjust my aim and hit this one."
"Okay," said Johanna as she handed Katniss an arrow.
Katniss fired again, and again the arrow nosedived. This time the arrow hit the turkey. Katniss felt a rush of adrenaline. Then the arrow harmlessly bounced off the turkey. Apparently Johanna didn't know that arrows had to be sharp.
"Sorry about the arrows," said Johanna.
"Don't worry about it," said Katniss. "You didn't know what you were doing."
"Thanks," said Johanna sarcastically.
"I didn't mean it that way," said Katniss. "Look it's awesome that you tried to make me some arrows by hand."
"And it's awesome that you're pretending for me," said Johanna
"I'm being serious." Katniss hugged Johanna. "Thanks for the arrows."
Johanna kissed Katniss. "You're welcome."
"Just, make sure you know what you're doing next time," said Katniss.
"I will," said Johanna.
