Failure

Disclaimer: I do not own Courage the Cowardly Dog, or it's characters.

Courage sat down, old. He had failed. Courage had failed. Muriel and Eustace were dead. It was just him. Alone. Memories everywhere. Tears everywhere. Regret everywhere.

"The things I didn't do..." Courage muttered, he then woofed, hoping someone, anyone infact, would hear him, or wake him up from what he called this disgusting nightmare. The Middle of Nowhere missed it's happily married couple and the place was nothing without it.

A knock on his door was heard.

Courage's eyes widened, and shook, literally. Courage silenced himself, his grinning ability had faltered over the years. But that went amiss when the words of Muriel were uttered, "Courage? Are you in there?"

Courage grinned, he rushed to the door in a cartoony fashion and opened it. Muriel stood, and walked in, bumbling per usual. Courage missed the sound of her voice, it was so angelic to him and brought back wondrous memories. Courage was scooped up by Muriel and hugged, Courage's eyes squeezed shut.

"Dumb dog!"

Courage was about to open his eyes, he was so happy, but something prevented him to and now 'Muriel' held his dead body, and Courage was dead. He really had failed.

Courage's eyes widened, and shook, literally. Courage silenced himself, his grinning ability had faltered over the years. But that went amiss when the words of his greatest enemy were uttered, "Courage? Are you in there?"

Courage grinned, he rushed to the door in a cartoony fashion and opened it. Freaky Fed stood, and walked in, bumbling 'per usual'. Courage missed the sound of 'her' voice, it was so angelic to him and brought back wondrous memories. Courage was scooped up by Fred and hugged, Courage's eyes squeezed shut.

"Dumb dog!"

Courage was about to open his eyes, he was so happy, but something prevented him to and now 'Muriel' held his dead body, and Courage was dead. He really had failed.

Courage had often imagined Muriel and Eustace as being alive, when they never were, it took him away from reality, and he enjoyed it. He enjoyed the delusions. He knew it was wrong.

But why?

He wanted to see them again. He didn't want to fail. He didn't want to. And they never knew. He never said he loved them before there deaths, and everytime his delusions came into play. He told them all the time.

Of course, he knew these were his great enemies, wanting revenge on foiling the schemes, they never gave up, never did and Courage had no idea why they were so hell bent on causing him torment when he had done nothing of wrongness, he hated how cruel his past had been. But he disliked the villains more. They all came in pairs weirdly, as if they knew his fears, his guilt, his utmost depression.

Courage envisioned the villains as Muriel and Eustace, and forcibly foiled there screams while sobbing wildly. This just wasn't him. Courage was damaged, Courage was gone.

Everytime, he defeated villains, a reminder popped up of the day. The day. Courage hated it. Courage hated himself. Courage just wished he would happen to wake up.

He never did.

The Courage everyone knew was never to return.

And for that, he is sorry.
