The world froze, its colors melting together leaving an earie hue of gray. My heart felt like it had stopped. Did he think this through? Is this what he really wants? Why didn't he talk to me first? Not that my opinion mattered anymore, still… I was, am currently his best friend. Kenshin, he's got to be joking. I glanced in his direction. He didn't look like he was joking as a matter of fact he looked happy sitting there with his right arm around her shoulders. I choked. Tomoe, why her….

" Kaoru?"

She wouldn't be able to make him happy.

" Kaoru?"

I just knew she wouldn't.

" Jou-chan!"

My gaze shifted to Sano. His eyes held worry, as his hands gripped my wrist under the table.

" Kaoru…..?"

I felt ill

" I'm fine…..sorry I zoned it was a tough day. Now what did you say?"

As if I needed to hear it again. I looked at him as he rolled his eyes. He looked as if he didn't want to repeat himself. I was glad maybe I won't have to go into shock. Then I glanced in her direction. She smiled. It wasn't a kind smile, nor was it a I'm happy I'm getting married smile. It was the kind of smile that said 'It was fun, but you weren't much of an opponent' . I held my breath waiting for Kenshin to deny it, to say something anything. I didn't have to wait long.

His fiance said it for him.

" We're getting married."

I felt her laughter echoing in my head even though her mouth didn't move . The look on her face gave enough away. She didn't love him. Why would she marry him? What did she want?

My mind went blank……

It was a game wasn't it?

There was a part of me that had always known, she didn't love him. I just didn't want to believe it. After all Kenshin has only ever seen her. Even when I tried to tell him she was no good.

" Kaoru- san?"

Fine, you wanna play Tomoe. Kenshin will never marry you, I'll make sure of it . Even if he ends up hating me. As long as he's not with you its fine with me. With that thought in mind I took a breath, squared my shoulders and looked her straight in the eye.

" Congratulations"

Bring it on.

Well that's the end of chapter 1. Well its more of a prologue just testing if people are interested then I'll upload more. I might even revise this. So comments appreciated.
