Guardians
A Guardian is a magical being similar to the Veela. A Guardian is unnaturally beautiful, but does not have the magnetic attraction of the Veela. A Guardian has a mate, referred to by the Guardian as its Beloved. The Guardian will do anything to protect their Beloved. Unlike the Veela who has to come into its Inheritance, a Guardian will recognize its Beloved at their first meeting. Also, a Guardian recognizes its Beloved by their mind, not their scent. The Guardian will love its Beloved unconditionally and forever. The Guardian can survive without bonding with its Beloved. Without a bonding, the Beloved will not be affected by the death of their Guardian. If rejected by their Beloved or if their Beloved dies, a Guardian will either commit suicide or waste away.
A Guardian has incredibly strong magical powers even at birth. When a Guardian first meets its Beloved, its magic doubles. And when the bonding between a Guardian and its Beloved occurs both the magic of the Guardian and the Beloved triples. A Guardian is impervious to curses and spells unless the Guardian willingly accepts the curse or spell. Empathy and the ability to read minds is a gift of the Guardians. Once the Guardian meets his or her Beloved, the Guardian will be able to sense their emotions and will know when the Beloved is in distress or danger. A Guardian also has wings. When the wings are not in use, they are retracted back into the Guardian's back. One of the identifying characteristics of a Guardian is the intricate wizard tattoo of wings that covers the Guardian's back and appears at birth.
Being a Guardian is not hereditary. A Guardian and its mate will not necessarily have children that are Guardians. The name of Guardian comes from original belief that Guardians were only born to guard people with important destinies. It is not known why a Guardian is born to a particular family. Some people say that the gods find two perfectly matched souls, with one having a more difficult destiny and thus needing a Guardian.
There is only one known family to continually produce Guardians. It is a well known fact that all females born in the Dumbledore line, which is descendent of Merlin's, are Guardians. Every female born to the family has been a Guardian. They are also the most powerful of the Guardians, and the most powerful witches of their generation. Females are very rarely born to the Dumbledore line. There is one born about every 150 or more years. The most recent is Rachel Dumbledore, granddaughter of Albus Dumbledore born in 1986.
