Horns are sounding. Glasses are clinking. Cheers and laughter fill the air. Around camp, the party is just beginning for most people.
"Happy New Year, Hawk," BJ smiles as he hands me a martini.
"Happy New Year to you too, Beej."
I hold up my drink and we touch them together. The musical sound of glass tinkling echoes through the Swamp then fades as silence, comfortable and familiar, blossoms and begins to expand around us. We allow it to settle in, to envelope us completely, until the only sound either of us hears is the slow inhaling and exhaling of our own breath. Everything else falls away into the darkness beyond the canvas walls of our tent.
BJ takes a seat on the bed next to me and slips his arms around my body. My cheek presses against his chest, the steady 'thump thump thump' of his heart beating softly in my ear. I go limp as his fingers weave into my hair, his thumb drawing circle after circle, tenderly, tenderly, at the nape of my neck.
When his lips meet mine, all of the pain and the suffering we've endured in this place; all of the blood and the smoke and the death we've seen throughout the past twelve months, melts away and disappears. And here we are, just BJ and me, in this one perfect moment.
I have prayed and prayed for the war to end, too many times to count, yet here, in this first minute of the brand new year, I can say with absolute certainty, that there's no where else on Earth I'd rather be.
