**Disclaimer: For the last time, the damn characters are not mine! Oh, except Miana of King's Reach.**

Tears fell, dropping onto her already stained coverlet. If she though about it, it would only be made worse. But, her mind thought, don't I have a choice? Can't I decide? What she didn't know was that she did have a choice. Go to court, or be brutally attacked, scarred for life. Miana of King's Reach was being sent to court, under the watchful eye of her brother, Faleron. Two days after she left, a raiding party from Scanra came to her fief. The raiders massacred her family and murdered her friends. But, at this point in time, Miana could really do without knowing this.

Lying, draped over the bed in her suite, Miana wept for the second time. News of the raid had just reached the King. She was in shock. Coolness spread through her body and suddenly her brother was there healing her physically, (she hadn't eaten in days) though nothing could ease the pain of her heart. He hugged her and began to talk. Miana didn't hear what he said, to start with, but after a while, words began to drift into her mind, "not your fault" "I'm sorry" "We'll get through this". That was too much. Miana pulled away from his grasp and ran. She would have run to the ends of the earth if it were possible. It was not. On her way she stumbled into the stables. She could hear muffled voices but she didn't care. Flinging herself into bundles of hay she lost herself, lost her sanity, and began to hallucinate. First she was home, but this was not right. There was blood, and everywhere. Recognition dawned on Miana in horror, this was the bloody mess of her fief, but more than that, her home. Then mists came over her. She wandered the plains of madness, unable to look forward to anything. Also, unable to come back.

The muffled voices belonged to Sir Nealan of Queenscove and Lady Keladry of Mindelan. Kel was grooming Peachblossom and Neal, friendly as ever **a/n This is NOT a K/N or a K/anyone for that matter.** had decided to join her. Kel was the one who first heard the thump of Miana hitting the hay bales. Running, she and Neal found the dishevelled girl. Neal lifted her and placed her on his horse, Whisper, and began walking her to the place. Kel ran ahead, to warn Duke Baird of the new arrival.
