The two of us watched the Volturi's retreating backs for a long moment. Then we looked at each other in silence. Garrett broke it. "Woooo!" he screamed, and the witnesses that remained joined in the cheer. Following the lead of Edward and Bella, Rosalie and Emmett, Eleazar and Carmen, and Benjamin and Tia, Garrett grabbed me around the waist and swung me high in the air.
"We did it, Kate, we really did it!" Garrett cried, setting me down. I leaned in closer, and the two of us shared the inevitable first kiss.
"So, are you coming with me now?" I asked, putting my hand on my hip.
Garrett pretended to deliberate. "Hmmmm..." he mused. When he took too long for my patience, I touched his arm lightly with my shock set high enough to stun him, but low enough to keep him on his feet. His eyes widened at the electricity, and then he hastily told me, "Of course I'm coming!"
I smiled, satisfied. "Much better," I approved.
"Kate, I promise to follow you everywhere you go," vowed Garrett, pulling me into a tight hug.
"That's what I like to hear." And although my still heart was shattered into a million pieces, grieving the loss of my sister and best friend Irina, some of the pieces fused together when I knew that Garrett would be by my side.
For eternity.
