Why must people discriminate?
Why must we always only 'tolerate'?
Why not look past what we see on the outside surface,
Or even past what we think we see?
I believe in just one race of people; the human race.
Why can we not all look past the surface?
Why can't we just search a little deeper?
I just don't understand.
I know that there is still prejudice in this world
I still want it to stop.
We may all be made up of different DNA
But look at little closer; we're all made of atoms.
So what if my skin is lighter or darker then yours?
Does that make you better then me?
Or does that make you inferior?
The true answer is neither.
No one should be ashamed of themselves
Not for something as insignificant as skin color
Or accent
Or heritage.
The measure of a man is through his actions and words
Never by his looks.
The phrase may be 'Actions Speak louder then words'
But in truth, it should be changed to: 'Actions speak louder then melanin'.
SLF: For those of you who don't know what melanin is, it's what gives your skin it's pigment. I wrote this right after I saw Remember the Titans for the first time; which was tonight. It really made me think of a lot of things an this is the product of that. I am proud to say that the movie made me cry. It's now one of my most favorite movies of all time; right up there with Mulan and Princess Mononoke. BTW, don't expect any more poems or anything from me for RTT; because I really don't see me doing any. I didn't try at all to rhyme in this; I feel so ashamed… :P
