Albus Dumbledore was a wise man. When Harry Potter had asked what he had seen in the Mirror of Erised, he told the boy he had seen himself holding a pair of socks, but that was far from the truth. He couldn't tell the young boy about what he had seen, for it would have been too much for him. Albus couldn't even tell the boy the whole truth about why he had a lightning scar. He couldn't tell the boy why Lord Voldemort killed his parents.
The life Albus had led was not perfect. His father had been in Azkaban for attacking three Muggle boys because they had attacked his younger sister, Ariana. She couldn't control her magic after the incident. His family had to move to Godric's Hollow, where he had met someone named Gellert Grindelwald who later would become one of the darkest wizards of all time. His mother was killed on one of his sister's magical outbursts, and that made Albus the head of the family while his younger brother, Aberforth finished his studies. He would spend his time with Gellert, instead of with his sister, Ariana, which he soon regretted afterwards. Albus had an argument with Aberforth and Gellert which led to a duel which caused his own sister's death. Gellert fled the scene, and none of them knew which had cast the curse which killed Ariana. He became a Transfiguration Professor at Hogwarts and eventually became the Headmaster.
Albus would occasionally visit the Mirror of Erised, which showed your heart's desire. He would see the smiling faces of his parents, the younger version of himself with his arms around his younger brother and sister, all laughing. And last but not least, he saw Gellert standing beside his brother, smiling brightly. Albus always reminded himself that he could have had this life if he hadn't made all those mistakes. In the end, it's always those small, painful mistakes that make the biggest changes in our lives.
I show not your face but your heart's desire.
