To a Soldier Dying Young
...
When you were naught but a child still,
Too young to know and immune to fear
We wore haunted smiles and false cheer
To shade your innocence from inevitable kill.
...
Alas! Too soon, the dreaded day come
You faced him bravely and still won.
Since life could not escape the bond
It's only natural two deaths belonged.
...
Perhaps this fate was best.
...
To have your light smothered in dark
The cunning Dark could never take Light.
And greater still, you would not fight
An ole remorseful man's lark.
...
You may have been cheated but
At least your soul be of alien make
To the repeat of an 'Old Man's Mistakes'
Goodnight, child, and
For once, sleep with your eyes shut.
A/N: You may have noticed that I deleted the explanation/analysis that follows this poem. I think you understand the poem without it and it the site doesn't permit an author's note as a chapter. However, if anyone wants to see it, just shoot me a PM.
