Drabble – Animal - 500 Words
Alexander came storming into Hephaestions' office, stopping in front of his desk, loudly asking where they were.
"Where who were?" asked Hephaestion, knowing the answer lie shivering around his feet under the table cover. Suddenly the mad dash of fur, that had come flying into his office a few minutes earlier, planting themselves around his feet, made more sense.
"You know who." The angry King declared.
"What did they do now?" Hephaestion asked hoping it was something that could be repaired.
"Do you remember the new cloak my mother sent me? The one that she said took months to sew the embellishments on?" Alexander said, his voice getting louder and higher as his statement progressed. He then held up a ragged piece of once beautiful material.
Hephaestion winched and his furry slippers shook even move.
As Alexander started looking under everything in the room he continued to shout and yell.
"If I see them I will let you know." Said Hephaestion before Alexander had a chance to look under his desk.
Alexander left mumbling to himself. Hephaestion waited a few minutes to make sure Sir Angry was not returning before calling the guilty ones out from hiding.
They came out with their tails between their legs, ears hanging almost to the floor and eyes full of remorse. Any pretense of bubbly puppy fun was gone.
Hephaestion looked down at them and stared until they couldn't look him in the eyes anymore. He stood up and told them to follow him. When he got to the door he turned and saw that they hadn't moved.
"You are the ones in trouble and you are the only ones that can fix this." Their master said.
Glancing back as the three made their way to Alexander's rooms, Hephaestion was sure what the were doing could not be considered a walk. It was more of a shaky crawl.
Alexander sat on a chair in the middle of the room and Hephaestion went to stand beside him. The quivering fur balls stopped as they entered the room. Hephaestion called them forward and they came to the two men slowly, inching their way ahead.
Alexander was still furious and it took every ounce of strength he had not to lay into them. The puppies looked first at Alexander, then at Hephaestion with lower eyes.
'Tell him." Hephaestion said to the naughty boys.
Little paws slowly made their way to Alexander's' leg, only to be hesitantly pulled back again, each time getting closer to resting on his thigh. Little painful moans came out of their mouths and soon they both began to mournfully howl. After their little sad song, they came forward, resting their heads on Alexander's leg, their big brown eyes looking up at him with big puppy tears.
Alexander looked at Hephaestion, who had his entire lower lip between his teeth.
Anger gone now, Alexander looked back down at the puppies.
He sighed loudly, suddenly understanding some of the faces his father used to make.
