Missing

A boy stared through the tunnel that he had once seen the girl he loved disappear through. He had made a promise to her, a promise of meeting again. But no matter how he tried, he could not get out of the spirit world. His river had been destroyed, and he was now doomed to walk the earth with no where to go. He could not leave the spirit world.

Please forgive me, Chihiro. Haku's mind whispered. I won't be able to keep my promise.

Haku wondered if one day Chihiro would wonder about him. Wonder if he was ever going to come for her. But he knew well that she wouldn't. She wouldn't miss him. She had forgotten him. Had she turned to look back, as he had told her not to do, she would have remembered. But humans were not supposed to know of this world, and so as she left the tunnel, any memory of her time there had been forgotten. If she did remember her experiences, would she miss him? He wondered.

I'm so sorry…Haku's mind whispered once more. Breathing in deeply, he yelled out through the tunnel in anger.

Slipping to his knees and leaning against the stone wall, hot tears spilled from his eyes. He could cry all he wanted, but he was not going to be able to see her again. She could care less if she knew nothing of the promise. But would she ever feel that something was missing? He soon cried himself to a sleep. He dreamt of her. Dreamt of escaping. Somehow he knew it was just a dream. He knew that if he awoke, he would still be sitting there, stuck inside of the spirit world.
