The Marital Musings of Anne Page

Married. I have to get married! I'm only sixteen! I mean, I guess I really wouldn't mind getting married –as long as it is to the right person. And that person is undoubtedly not someone my parents choose. Neither of them. Not as if that stopped them anyway, since they took it upon themselves to find me a suitable husband. They can't even settle on one. Not that I can blame them really. I can't stand either of their would-be-son-in-laws.

My mother wants me to marry a certain Doctor Caius, the renowned French physician. And there lies the problem: he's French. As in, he barely speaks English! How could I marry a man I can't even understand? I can just imagine what my life would be like.

'Vat do you sink you are you doing? You sould not be wasting your time reading sose silly books! You sould be mekking yourself useful by sowing some interest in me and my brilliant studies!'

There is nothing that could persuade me to marry him! I don't care how much money he has! It's not worth it! Then again, the idiot my father wants to marry me off to is no better. He fancies himself in love with me. I think obsessed would be more accurate. I've only met him once! He is a fool. There's no way to get around it. And I will not be tied down to someone completely lacking common sense.

If I could have my choice of a husband, it would most certainly be Master Fenton. He is the only one I will have, for he is the only one I love. He is clever and speaks beautifully –and in perfect English. But what is most important is that he loves me, too. And if he were to ask for my hand, I think I might agree. Of course that would mean defying both of my parent's wishes. Though, it had to be done. It would have been impossible for me to please both of them.

Mistress Ann Fenton. That does have a nice ring to it. Married to Fenton. Yes, that will do wonderfully. Now, all that's left is for him to propose.
