Cloud Strife wasn't the hero everyone made him out to be and, to be honest, he was getting sick of the admiring looks everyone threw his way. As if he had been the one to save the world. Yes, he had killed Sephiroth but he hadn't saved the Planet. Aeris was the true hero of the Planet. She had sacrificed herself to pray for Holy. She was the one who had to save Cloud and the others from the Crater as Holy began to stir after Sephiroth's defeat.
If it hadn't been for Aeris pulling him through, he wouldn't even have been alive right now. He had no right to be worshipped as a hero. When he had defeated Sephiroth, all he wanted to do was stay in the crater and die. If it wasn't for Aeris reaching out to him, if it wasn't for the hope that he might feel her touch again if he caught that hand, he wouldn't be here.
The same with Bahamut. There was no way any of Avalanche could have defeated that monster! The only reason he had managed to win that battle was because of Aeris. She had once again reached out her hand for him, offering him strength. And for that brief second, he felt her touch once more. It was that second of contact, the feel of her hand in his, that gave him strength to defeat Bahamut.
Now, all he could do was come to her Church and thank her for always being there. And hope that someday, he could feel her touch once more. A touch that will never leave him again.
