As we come out of Huggy's, all his confidence fades like smoke into thin air. His step falters, so suddenly that I almost lose grab of his shoulders. Almost. He's not gonna go anywhere this time, not if I have a say in it.

Anyone who ever hurt me, Hutch made sure they paid all their dues. But what he's asking of himself is a higher price than any man could ever pay. That's how much he loves me.

"Starsk, I'm sorry."

His tears are a sight I can't stand, never could. "It's okay," I whisper as I pull him closer, knowing he won't believe me just yet. But it's true. That's how much I love him.

This rift we've let grow between us until we ended up that far is the premise to a battle we hadn't seen coming, the one wound we were never prepared for. We could let it rip us apart and forget there had ever been flesh and blood in between. Or we could try and pull the edges back together, let it heal and leave a scar for us to remember how much it hurt.

And to be proud to have made it.

Together.
