I really love the very last episode of Gilmore Girls. Everything just seems to fall in to place; Rory gets to meet Christiane Amanpour, the town surprise party, her job as a reporter, her grandparents showing up, Richard telling Lorelai they're proud of her, the continuation of the Friday night dinners, Luke and Lorelai, everything is just so wonderful and I cry every time I watch it.
But (there's always a but), in my mind, for everything to fall in to place, Jess is required. So, here's my take on how to show should have ended. Just a short oneshot story.
My take requires Liz knowing about Jess' and Rory's relationship, and since she showed up in Stars Hollow after Jess left, just imagine either Luke or Jess told her about it.
Set during the last episode, at Rory's surprise party.
After walking her grandparents to their car, Rory stops and looks at the town square from a distance. To think that they did all this for her; she must remember to thank everyone before leaving tomorrow. She feels a lump in her throat, like she's about to cry. She swallows the lump and takes a deep breath, it's just so amazing, how everything seems to be falling into place.
She starts walking towards the town square when she sees a man standing at a street corner; his back leaned against a wall, gazing at the town square. Slowly she walks up to him and says in a questioning tone:
"Jess?"
"Rory." He stands up straight, and a look of surprise flashes over his face.
She smiles and hugs him, it's a quick hug and he doesn't even have time to react before the hug is over.
"Oh my god, what are you doing here?" She says, still smiling and shaking her head, as if she can't really believe he's here.
"My mother called me. Driveled something about a space-time continuum and how this was my wormhole."
"Your wormhole, huh?" She smiles.
"Yeah, I have no idea what she meant." He smiles back at her.
"Come dance with me Jess."
"Rory…You know I don't dance."
"We'll make it a slow dance." She grabs his arm and starts dragging him towards the town square, he reluctantly follows with a smile on his lips.
"It's really just like hugging you know. Only there's music, and you move a little." She continues. "You don't have to move, if you don't like to. You could just stand there and I'll do the moving."
They enter the area where people are dancing. Jess looks at her and smiles, takes her in his arms and whispers:
"For you, Rory Gilmore, I could probably endure some moving."
The song playing isn't really meant to be a slow dance song and around them people are dancing like there's no tomorrow: Zach and Lane, Babette and Mory, Sookie and Jackson, Kirk and Lulu, even Taylor is dancing due to much convincing on Miss Patty's side. But they don't care; they just stand there in each other's arms, dancing a slow dance.
