Never the Twain Shall Meet
Vala walked slowly to Daniel's office, dreading what she was about to say but knowing it was necessary. This latest fight had just been too much for her. Taking a deep breath, she entered the room and smiled sadly at the sight he made, sitting hunched over an artefact.
"Daniel?"
"Vala." His head shot up and an uneasy smile lit his face. "Listen, I'm sorry about earlier-"
"I know you are, Daniel." she interrupted, shrugging in defeat. "I am, too. That's kind of what I wanted to talk about."
"Look, I shouldn't have said those things. It was a heat of the moment reaction but it was wrong." Daniel stood and started to come toward her but she backed away. He stopped, looking hurt and confused.
"This isn't working any more."
"Wh-What's not working?" he stuttered.
"This. Us. We're not working."
"Vala, it was one argument." he told her, trying to grab her hand but she pulled out of reach again.
"No, Daniel, it was one battle in an on-going war." She let out a sound that was somewhere between a humourless laugh and a sigh. "I'm tired of fighting. I think we should just surrender."
"What are you saying?" His eyes filled with fear and Vala had to close hers for a second before she could continue.
"I'm saying we should end it. You were right when you said we're too different, that we're complete opposites. It's never going to work between us."
"Vala, I love you." This time he was able to grab onto her and looked her right in the eye. "We can work this out."
"I love you, too, my Daniel." She smiled sadly and touched his face gently. "But I don't think we can and I'm too tired to try. It'll be better for both of us if we just chalk it up to a bad decision and walk away."
"Vala..." His voice sounded broken to her ears as his hands fell away from her in defeat.
"I'm sorry, Daniel." she told him, tears burning in the back of her eyes. "You have no idea just how sorry I am." With that, Vala took off down the corridor and headed straight for the gateroom, not once looking back.
