"Lord Sesshomaru!"
The young girl's voice was the only thing that broke the silence that had engulfed the trio as they walked. She looked as happy as ever, her brown eyes shining as she almost literally skipped to her master's side.
The white-haired demon turned his gaze down to her, eyes cold and unchanging, even as he saw what she held in her small hands.
"Look, Lord Sesshomaru!" She exclaimed, beaming as bright as the sun as she held up the gift she'd made for him. It was a bright-colored necklace, woven out of flowers. Purple, blue, white, and pink blended together as she hurried to catch up to him, determined not to be left behind.
"Rin!" The small imp didn't look at all pleased, though that was really nothing new. "Don't bother him with unnecessary things!"
"But it is necessary!" Rin protested, and she turned her gaze up towards Sesshomaru again, her gaze wide and adoring. "I made this for you, my Lord!" She said, and held the necklace up to him. His expression didn't change, but he had stopped walking by now, causing Jaken, still rambling on about Rin and her antics, to run right into his leg. Even as he sputtered an apology, it seemed as though no one was paying any attention to him.
"I found some flowers, and they were just so pretty," She continued, completely oblivious to the stare that would have frozen many good men, and demons, in their tracks. She seemed to be the only one immune to it. "So I decided to make something with them!" She said, still beaming as she held it up. "Do you like it?" She asked, her eyes hopeful as she looked at him expectantly.
"Of course he doesn't like it!" Jaken exclaimed, having picked himself up off the ground by now. "Lord Sesshomaru would never wear something like that, you silly girl!" He exclaimed. "It's an insult that you would even suggest such a thing! You should know better than to-"
"Jaken."
That one word was enough to make the imp freeze in the middle of his sentence, because of who had spoken it. Sesshomaru still wasn't looking at him, instead at the small girl in standing front of him. Her gaze had dimmed slightly, and she slowly lowered her hands, looking dejected.
"I'm sorry, m'lord," She said quietly, digging her toes into the soft dirt underneath her feet. She turned her gaze away from his quickly, gripping the necklace tightly in her hands. When a clawed hand took it away from her, she looked up, her face a mask of surprise, quickly replaced by delight.
"I will accept it." His voice held no emotion, no tone in it at all to suggest that he had felt anything at all. Jaken's spluttering was quickly ignoring as Rin grinned.
"I'm so glad, m'lord!" She exclaimed, but he was already walking again. "Wait for me, Lord Sesshomaru!" She cried, hurrying after him to keep up, stepping over Jaken on the way.
As they sat around the fire that evening, Jaken already sound asleep and snoring, Rin turned her gaze to Sesshomaru. He wasn't looking at her; he had his back to her, and was staring down at something in his hands. When he turned back to her she quickly closed her eyes, keeping them open only slightly, enough to watch him but not to be seen as awake.
He lifted something around his neck, then turned back around again. Rin's eyes widened, and a grin graced her lips as she looked at the purple, blue, white and pink that now adorned her lord's neck. He looked down at it, his face expressionless, before he took it off and dropped it down onto the dirt. Rin closed her eyes again, listening to his footsteps as he sat down a few feet away from her.
She slept soundly, a smile still plastered on her face, one that remained until morning.
