You're My Son

Jim wakes up in the medbay a lot, like a lot a lot, and usually he wakes -in at least minor pain- to Bones bent over his bed and cursing at him for being a total idiot. Not this time. This time he's in a whole hell of a lot of pain, and the one standing over his bed was not Bones but Admiral Pike. A very pissed off Admiral Pike.

He remembered going to some planet, an ambush, stepping in front of Chekov, giving the kid enough time to get to the scrambler, and...oh...yeah, he'd been shot. And Admiral Pike, his Dad, had ordered him not to die. And he had, well, he thought that he had anyway.

"Hey," Jim rasped out, wincing as he tried to sit up.

Pike's face immediately went from pissed off to concerned. He put a hand on the Captain's shoulder, holding him down, "Don't try to sit up until Dr. McCoy checks you out. You tried to die on us."

"Sorry."

Pike sighed, "It's not your fault."

"..." Jim looked off to the side.

"You scared everyone. They had to sedate Commander Spock." Pike said gently, "I haven't commed your mom, yet."

"Don't tell her," Jim said quickly, "Why'd they sedate Spock?"

"You thought I was mad? I was pretty sure he'd nerve pinch the nurses for touching you. You were groaning a lot, even unconscious."

"Oh..."

Pike reached a hand out, running his fingers through Jim's hair in a rare show of affection, "You know, I was never married before your mom. Well, maybe I was married to Starfleet. I didn't have any kids, except for maybe my crew. But after I met Winona, after we got married, I gained not only a wife but two sons. I love you, and George. You're my son, and there's nothing I wouldn't do for you, but you have to promise not to try and get yourself killed again."

Jim smiled softly, "I'll do my best, Dad."

Pike pulled his hand away as Dr. McCoy walked in. The man looked nearly murderous. He was silent as he scanned Jim before pulling the Captain into a tight hug, "Don't you fucking do that again you asshole."

Jim winced a little but the pain passed. He hugged his friend awkwardly back, "Can't make any promises there Bones, but I'll do what I can."

"The Admiral tell you we had to sedate Spock?" Bones said, pulling away.

"Yeah, what's up with that?"

"Oh please."

"What?"

"Everyone knows that you're dating."

Jim flushed and cleared his throat.

"No one cares." Bones added.

"Is he okay?" Jim asked, looking worried.

"You're the one that almost died and you're asking if he's okay?" Pike sighed, shaking his head, "Yep, you're back."

"Yeah, he's fine. He'll wake up in a bit and I'll send him in here."

"Thanks Bones."

Dr. McCoy waved his hand dismissively and after giving Jim another once over with the tricorder claimed he needed a few days medical leave, but otherwise he was healing up fine. After the CMO left the room, Jim turned back to Pike.

"So...can I call you Dad now?" He asked teasingly.

Christopher sighed for the third time that hour, "I suppose. You are my son after all."

Jim couldn't help but grin.
