Author's note: Tumblr prompt was flower. I know from my writing you can't really tell I like DenNor, because SuNor is my favorite, but I do love them. Just like my favorite Finnish ship is SuFin, my favorite Danish ship is DenNor.
A Gift to be Simple
Lukas feels, rather than sees, the flower being tucked behind his ear. "What are you doing Idiot?" he demands.
"It's a flower!" Christen announces. Indigo eyes stare into his, no emotions behind them. "It's for you!"
"It's from my garden," Lukas states, blinking once. The Dane continues to smile happily, just like how Lukas continues to stare blankly at him. "I don't need a flower." A hand leaves his book to remove the flower, but one of his boyfriend's stops him.
"Just leave it," Christen whispers quietly. "Please? For me."
The infuriating thing about Christen is he rarely thinks things through. He acts without reflection, speaks without saying anything of value, hears without listening, loves without control. It drives Lukas up the wall, though he does his best to contain that feeling of utter disdain. The Danish nation is the only one he puts up with.
Because the wonderful thing about Christen is that he does things just because. He kisses Lukas in public, just because the Norwegian looked kissable. He puts his coat around Lukas's shoulder, just because the Norwegian shivered once. He tells him he loves him too many times a day, just because he doesn't want the Norwegian to forget.
Lukas blinks once more, that smile never wavering on Christen's lips, before leaning in to kiss him chastely. It's the simple gifts from a simple man, the simple moments and simple words: that's why Lukas stays, that's why he puts up with Christen. That's why he loves him.
"I love you," Christen whispers happily against his lips. Lukas nods, their noses rubbing together.
"I love you too. Now shut up and let me read Idiot."
The head settles down on his lap, like always, and the Norwegian places his arms around the Danish body to go back to his story, though secretly he steals a glance down to watch Christen close his eyes, sighing deeply and contently.
Lukas loves Christen because Christen loves him unconditionally. He knows he isn't the easiest man to be with, but neither is his boyfriend, and that's why they were made for each other. A nation with a complex mask he hides behind, and one with a gift for being simple.
