When he looked at the photo of Veronica that John Abruzzi had, he felt fear. Even if it was part of his plan, he felt terrible to be making use of her like that. Veronica, the person who watched over him when Lincoln wasn't, she didn't deserve to be threatened. She made sure he had food, had clothes. She taught him what he needed to get through school, helped him out of tight spots. Veronica took over the role of his mother soon enough. So when they had to talk about their parents in class, Michael decided to talk about Veronica. Not Mrs Scofield, although he still regarded her as his mother. She was dead, but Veronica was there.

It took him a while to realise that he loved Veronica. Not the same way as Lincoln did, that was special. He treated Veronica like an older sister he never had, he loved her as family. He hated her at first, he remembered. Because she was taking Linc away from him. Linc was hardly home, and whenever he was, Veronica would be over and they would be making out on the couch. But when Linc was in Juvie, she was the only one he could call for help. So in his own special way, he loved Veronica.

He had no idea that Veronica was in trouble over Lincoln's case. He made her take the case, it was on him. After the escape, after running away from the cemertry, Lincoln had called Veronica. It was quiet whispering at first, and then Linc had shouted. Lincoln hardly ever shouted. He held his brother in his arms when he was told the fate of Veronica. They had one more thing to get back at the President for. Proving Lincoln's innocence, and revenge for Veronica's unlawful death.

Michael knew that Lincoln still loved her. Even if she left him for college, even if he was the one who broke her heart by getting Lisa pregnant, even if she was now dead thanks to the Company. Lincoln still loved her. Ever since they were young, they were in love. Now Veronica was dead while trying to save his life. They wouldn't forget her, she died for them. Both brothers loved her. All they had left of her was a photograph that John Abruzzi kept and the memories from before all these happened. She was gone forever.
