Prologue - Never Forget

He remembered that day. The day the war ended. The female doctor that did her best to care for him on 'bad' days had brought an old portable t.v into the lab. They sat there together, the older woman with her back to a cage, and the small boy, looking out through the glass walls of said cage. As they watched, without ever taking her eyes off the slightly staticy screen, the woman spoke.

"Remember this day, Ex938, always. Those people... they did something. They did something meaningful." She finally turned, her brown eyes connecting through the glass with unnaturally bright emerald eyes. "They did things. Bad things, good things, it matters not. What matters is that they did what they could. They looked around at the suffering people around them, and made the choice to do something about it. To help them. It's a choice that I couldn't make, I can't make. When the time comes; if that time ever comes... will you be able to make the right choice?"

Her eyes shone with intensity as she gazed apon Ex938. He gazed at her once more, before turning his eyes back to the t.v. He gave no reply, visible or verbal, but thought about her speech all the same. He felt a giddy sort of feeling -one that was rarely felt and remained unnamed to the undersized teen- when he thought about all the people that were helped, saved.

At the same time, though, he felt a bitter feeling rise up in his throat. He would never have a savior like those people did. He would never be freed from his cage for anything other than the twisted experiments that the Doctor put him through on a whim. He would never see outside again... that bright, beautiful place that he vaguely remembered from 'Before'.

Giving one last, longing look at the flickering t.v, and pulling his eyes over the form of the female doctor who was still watching him, he covered his face with a curtain of ebony hair and curled up to sleep. Eyes closed, lost in thought, he never noticed as the woman turned off the television, and left with a whispered 'Sleep well'.

As he slowly drifted off to sleep, there was no way that Ex938 could know that in a mere few months, his life would change. He would not know that even now, on the very day the war ended, an organization was being finallized. All he knew was that when he woke, he would be sent for, and his emotionless, empty life would go on.

He certainly didn't know that it would be five boys who would change his life forever.

A/N:

Well, there's the prologue for you. Let me know what you think!
The next chapter will be of the "Before" time, maybe a bit of the boys too.

I will try to update once a week, if anyone is interested in more. No promises though. Just because I want to doesn't mean it will always happen.
I will try to have Chapter 1 out Monday or Tuesday.

Oh, and the title comes from the small little poem:

Never forget me,
Forget me never,
But if you forget me,
Forget me forever.
