Eleventh Hour
The blood, everywhere blood…
They say that life is what you make of it…
"Beth! Beth, stay with me!"
Sometimes you bask in the sun…
Golden hair…sticky and clumped.
—"I'll meet you there in two hours…I have the perfect dress."—
The smell of death in the air.
Other times you're wracked on the rocks.
"Mick…" Coughing…her voice is throaty and thick with blood…red flecks her teeth, bubbles up in her mouth...
The blood, everywhere blood.
It's what we do…
His hands supporting her…cradling her broken body.
The choices we make…
He can hear her pulse…it is fading.
"Mick…do it. Please. I don't want to die. I don't want to die."
She's sobbing. He can smell her terror.
That define us.
Sirens in the distance…it must be now, or it will be too late.
"Beth!"
They say life is tough, and then you die…
The blood, everywhere blood, on his shirt, on his hands, in his mouth, down his throat.
Hoary eyes, piercing fangs…
But I'm already dead.
"Drink, Beth." No response…
Frantic, "Beth, drink!"
And life isn't getting any easier.
No pulse, no response…already she is becoming cold.
The blood, everywhere blood.
The universe isn't always on your side…
He massages her throat, forcing her to swallow.
A tear splashes against the jagged metal of the car door, protruding from her stomach.
He slides it out. It doesn't matter anymore…
Beth is dead.
But sometimes, it is.
A cough…
A stirring…
"Beth?" Desperate hope. Did it work?
Eyelashes part, silver eyes dart around, fangs peek out…
He plucks her from the crushed car frame, cradles her in his arms as his bride…
Beth is with me now…
The blood, everywhere blood—In the fridge, in the glasses, in the veins…
Pumping, pulsing...singing.
And I'm no longer alone.
Two vampires...
One heart...
One soul...
One love.
