Love You Like A Love Song
Lucy van Pelt sat, leaning on Schroeder's toy piano. She listened to him play a song (Beethoven, of course.) and thought about their future. They were both teenagers now; at thirteen, they were still the same people as they were as kids.
"Schroeder, what should our song be? We've got to have our own theme song. So when we get older and get married, that song would play at our reception. What do you suggest? I think it should be-" Lucy stopped rambling on when Schroeder played louder. "HEY! Are you even listening to me?"
Schroeder's response was playing a very loud, angry tune. His face turned red with anger. "SCHROEDER?" Lucy yelled. But then she covered her ears when he played his loudest. She frowned and went back to being silent.
After a few minutes, Schroeder started playing a softer tune, quieter. "Schroeder, do you think your parents will approve of us getting married?" Lucy asked, wide-eyed. Under his breath, he muttered, "Good grief. I hope not."
Lucy scowled. She hated when his negativity silenced her. "Well, I hope thet do. If not, we should run away together! It's like Romeo and Juliet. They got married in secret."
Schroeder was starting to get irritated again. "Ugh," he said, quietly. "Schroeder, what would your reaction be if I went off and married someone else? Huh?" Lucy pondered.
Schroeder was surprised. He thought the first thing he should do was ignore that question. But he couldn't, so he just said, simply, "I don't know."
"Hm. Would you cry?"
"Wh-hat?"
"Would you cry if I moved away permanently and never ever came back?"
Schroeder's piano playing went off-key and he stopped playing. "I don't know."
"I bet you would," Lucy said, grinning mischievously. She giggled, and Schroeder blushed really hard.
Schroeder groaned and started playing another song.
"D'ya know something, Schroeder?"
"What?"
"I love you like a love song. Now play something romantic!"
Surprised, amazed, and happy, Schroeder started playing a romantic song, which Lucy took in and closed her eyes. Quietly, she smiled.
"I mean it."
The End
