Set Up
The sound of brake's screeching and the truck jolting to a stop, obviously having hit something, made Sam suddenly look up from her book. She was sitting in the front of the car, cautiously thumbing through a copy of Astrophysics that Pete had given her for her birthday; Jack was driving. Technically she was supposed to be at her house waiting for Pete but she had needed time to think things through. Pete's marriage proposal was one of them. Jack was another.
'Shit.'
The book had hit the floor upon impact. 'What did we hit sir?'
'Erm, that black convertible behind. Looks like the driver's pissed…' Jack stated.
He looked in his rear view mirror and saw the irritated man step from the vehicle.
'Shit.'
'What now?' Sam asked.
'It's Pete.'
A look of horror washed across Sam's face. She couldn't be seen with Jack, not when she was supposed to be at her house.
'What do we do?'
'You stay here Carter; I'm going go be friendly to Pete. Offer to pay for damages etc. Suck ass.'
Sam smiled and mouthed a 'thanks' as he reluctantly got out of the car to go 'play nice' with Pete.
It was common knowledge that Jack didn't like Pete; Pete didn't like Jack. They were only ever civil for Sam's sake. If it weren't for Sam they would have come to blows long ago.
'Hey look I'm sorry about your car, I'll pay for damages.' Jack carefully told the back of Pete.
He turned, face red with anger. 'You! You bastard.' He moved towards Jack and raised his fists.
'Whoa, careful buddy.'
'Buddy! You reversed into my car you prick.'
Jack caught his fist as it moved towards his face and swiftly twisted it behind Pete's back. His squeezed Pete's wrist and pushed him back to his car.
'I'm sorry and like I said, I'll pay for damages.'
He let go of Pete's wrist and pulled his wallet from his pocket. He grabbed three notes and tossed them at Pete.
'300 dollars.' He began, 'if you need any more you know where to find me.'
Pete breathed heavily and reluctantly watched an unharmed Jack return to his truck. His mouth fell open in shock as he saw Sam sitting in the front seat, door open, silently watching the scene before her. He watched Jack walk to the passenger door, gently stroked her face and closed the door. He then walked around the back of the truck, smiled knowingly at Pete and got in the car.
'Thank you.'
'For what?'
'For not hitting him; you could have but you didn't.'
'Don't thank me Carter.' Jack added; he opened his mouth as if to say something else but he promptly shut it and settled for a sigh instead.
Because perhaps it would be better that Sam didn't know that he had orchestrated the accident and perhaps it would be better than she didn't know that he had done it purely to rub Pete's nose in it and perhaps she shouldn't know that Jack had whispered, 'She's mine now,' in his ear while pushing him back to his car.
But he had done it for all the right reasons.
