Castiel Hangs the Garland
"I'm supposed to wrap this around a tree?" Castiel stood with a long strand of garland flowing from his hands. In another part of the bunker, Sam was busy hanging red and white stockings from a mantle.
"Yes," Sam answered through a mouth full of nails. He raised a hammer to drive another nail into the fireplace's mantle.
Castiel didn't understand the point of this but with Sam preoccupied and Dean out of the bunker for the day, he knew he would get no explanations. He would just have to chalk this up as yet another Mortal Thing. Castiel already had a lengthy list of those. So without further ado, Castiel went to find himself a tree. It didn't take long to locate one. Trees were plentiful on Earth. Now the question was; which tree would this strand of garland compliment best?
It could provide a sparse cover for one of the many ash trees in the area. However, he would need a lot more garland to make it presentable. 'Festive,' was the word Sam used. His purpose here today was to make a tree festive for the Christmas season. Castiel didn't understand Christmas either but he simply moved it to his list and moved on to more pressing tasks.
A white poplar tree covered in snow shivered as he passed underneath. A soft plop, and Castiel stood under it with a small pile of snow dripping off his head and onto the collar of his trench-coat. He shook it off and pressed on. He didn't have enough garland to decorate that one anyway.
Another snow covered tree towered over him. It was majestic. Its wide trunk rose up towards the sky and its snow covered branches stretched out in every direction. A sycamore. Beautiful, grand…bare.
He had never thought about why a tree became bare in the winter. Didn't trees get cold, too? The leaves could provide a cover for them. Humans wore clothes for that reason. Why did plants not do the same? This question he would have to add to the List of Things to Ask Dad. At any rate, unless he gathered more garland and lights, he would have to move –
Castiel glanced down at the garland trailing behind him and then up at the bare trees surrounding him.
"BREAKING NEWS," the local news anchor announced. "Last night all stores in Smith County were robbed. What has police baffled, however, is that the thief did not target the safes or expensive items. In fact, the only things reported missing were their Christmas decorations and a single Christmas tree from a Walmart in Lebanon. The suspect left no clues as to their identity, but deputies have located the missing merchandise."
"Wow, that looks great, Cas," Sam praised as he stood in front of the Christmas tree Castiel had liberated from a Walmart a couple hours ago. "Really festive."
"Thank you, Sam." A smirk appeared on his lips as he appraised the image of his work on the TV screen.
"Town officials have decided to leave unused ten acres of trees in their festive array," the anchor continued.
"It's given this town more Christmas spirit," an official told his interviewer. "Look at the smiles on these people's faces. They love it. Of course that doesn't mean we won't be bringing up charges when we find the culprit. Stealing is wrong, no matter how well-intentioned the person is."
Sam leaned over the couch to watch the news report. "Looks like someone was busy last night."
"Hey, guys!" Dean entered the bunker and stopped dead at the sight of the place. "You two were busy, huh?"
"Cas, mostly," Sam answered with a wide grin. "I'm pretty sure he found his Christmas spirit."
"I forgot to ask, what is this Christmas spirit everyone keeps talking about?"
