I wrote this story because I feel there aren't enough Sam and Pippin friendship stories.
This story takes place after Gandalf's battle with the balrog. The fellowship is now far away from the mines.
Pippin was sitting on a rock with his head down on his arms. He was sobbing his heart out. He felt useless. He joined the fellowship to help them and he failed several times. Sam walked by and saw his head down in his arms and heard him crying. He approached him and knelt down in front of him.
"Are you ok Pippin?" Sam asked in a low voice.
Pippin took his head out of his arms and looked at Sam. "I'm useless Sam," he said sadly. I came to help Frodo out instead I made things worse for him and everybody else. I shouldn't have come."
"You are a great help on this trip, Pippin."
"How can you say that," he said angrily, "you saw all the trouble I've caused from the beginning. I couldn't protect Frodo from the Nazgul."
"None of us could. They were too strong," Sam interrupted.
"At least you tried. I just stood there like a coward."
"You were frightened."
"I caused Gandalf's death."
"No you didn't."
"Yes I did, I threw the stone in the well and alerted the orcs.'
"We would have encountered the orcs even if you were as quiet as a mouse. There were so many in moria that it would not have been possible to go through it without encountering them."
"The stone alerted the orcs to our presence sooner."
"Yes, but not the balrog. It was a balrog that "killed" Gandalf not orcs."
"I almost gave away Frodo's name to the people in the Prancy Pony inn, and I suggested to Merry to go outside and get some fresh air and he almost got killed by a nazgul. I'm a failure Sam." He started to cry again.
Sam wrapped his arms around him and tried to comfort him. Pippin was crying in his chest. Sam was rubbing his back.
"I know you made some mistakes Pippin, but you also did a lot of good on this quest and that outweighs them."
"Good?" Pippin said between sobs.
"You cheered Frodo up when he was sad. You made him forget his problems for a while by reminding him about the fun we had in the shire especially the harmless jokes you and Merry played on others. You comforted him and kept him warm when he was chilled. You and Merry learned sword fighting from Boromir, and that would be very useful on this quest. Who knows how many more times we may encounter enemies. Your sword fighting skills will come handy. You did protect Frodo from a few orcs. You are a very valuable person Pippin."
Pippin stopped crying and started to feel better. He got out of Sam's arms.
"Thank you Sam, you are a good friend,"
"So are you Pip, you have a good heart. Let's join the others."
"Ok."
The end.
