Red eyes opened slowly, bags hanging under their dull vermilion depths. The sound of cries drew the albino from his bed, running down the hallway.

Flinging the door open he sighed at the sight of his younger brother obviously in the throes of another nightmare.

This had become an every night occurrence for about 3 months. Crawling in bed with the small blonde he wrapped his arms around the small child, drawing him close. Within minutes the cries stopped and with a sigh of relief Gilbert realized his brother was sound asleep.

Vermilion eyes opened when something cold pressed against his warm body and Gilbert sighed, looking down at the lump under the sheets huddled against him. Throwing back the sheet revealed his brother, now a teenager, curled up beside him, snoring cutely. He still snuck into the Prussian's bed at every chance he got, making his brother laugh.

Readjusting he cuddled the teen, his voice soft.

"Sleep well bruderlein.

"BRUDER!"

Sighing the Prussian rose from his warm bed, hissing when his feet met the cold hard wood of the floor. Padding into his brothers room he blinked, the teenager was sitting up, his face whiter than normal and eyes full of fear.

"Was it the same dream?" He asked softly, already knowing the answer.

The blonde nodded wordlessly, beginning to tremble.

Gilbert slid under the covers, cuddling the boy close.

"You can't always do this, you know that right?"

"I know…but you chase the monsters away, and I'm not scared anymore when you're with me bruder." Ludwig answered, a blush on his cheeks.

The older male smiled and kissed his head, closing his eyes encouraging his younger sibling to do the same.

Gilbert sighed, knowing his brother was having a hard time dealing with the after-effects of a war he never wanted. The Allies had broken the once proud nation, and the Prussian didn't know how he could put him back together again.

A cry broke him out of his thoughts and he rushed to his brothers room, not even hesitating to crawl into the bed as he had all throughout the young personified nation's life thus far.

Pulling the blonde to him he stroked his hair, allowing the German to sob into his chest, the nightmares too much for him.

"I'm sorry bruderlein…I wish I could help you." He spoke softly, voice just barely above a whisper.

He didn't expect to hear anything, and the muffled reply caught him off guard.

"You chase the monsters away, and I'm not scared anymore when you're with me bruder. Please don't leave me too."

Gilbert smiled sadly, hugging him tighter.

"I promise I won't ever leave you." He lied, knowing their time together was drawing to a close. Closing his eyes he encouraged him to sleep, lying awake himself. Until the Allies came for him in the morning he refused to release his brother.
