What's you're favourite colour Bella?
She remembers the typical kindergarten question that the other kids used to ask constantly.
Fighting over the colour blue or the colour pink, saying it was their favourite.
Bella's favourite colour was always blue, but over the years like so many other things, it changed.
It was no longer the colour of the melted crayons sitting on the window sill or the colour of the sky.
When she moved to this dreary town all she could hope for was warmth and the sun and the beach and the sand. She wanted Brown.
But then that fateful day at Forks high school,
that lopsided smile and those shining eyes she didn't even give a second thought about the answer she slurred over to the same question she heard back then.
What's your favourite colour Bella?
Because she is completely oblivious to the world around her as he looks her in the eyes.
Amber.
It sounds more complex then a simple brown, Amber was more intelligent, a more mature colour.
You wouldn't hear 7 year olds running around, saying their favourite colour was Amber.
Brown was the past.
But Bella didn't know that her whole future was tinted gold.
*
Everyday she watched those topaz eyes following her every move, she never thought of it as a predator stalking its prey.
She believed he was simply a boy and she was a girl, and the story would go on as it was supposed to. At least she tried to believe that.
But there's a snag in their story and it ends with tear stained pillows and an empty forest.
During that time in Bella's life she found it tempting to start wanting brown again.
The sand under her toes, the sun on her face.
But where would he stand in that picture?
And so she relies on the hidden sun that dimly shines through the clouds on this dull town.
And then she sees Jacob again, the full-hearted friend she used to know.
And over the months she grows used to the words 'Best friend' around him,
And he's okay with that even though he wants so much more.
Soon Bella finds that it's no long the sun she is waiting for but it's her sort of beautiful best friend who holds her close and keeps her warm.
They hugged, like her and Edward never could.
They talked and laughed, like her and Edward never would.
They were alive, like her and Edward could never ever be. *
And once again things were changing at normal human speed, because Bella is sick of supernatural quickness.
Bella looks up into Jacobs smiling face, and stares deep into his brown orbs and says truthfully 'I wish we could stay here forever.'
He laughs and holds her close, waiting for everything to get better.
*
She is surprised when she sees the same Amber eyes staring back at her.
What were they full of? She thought. Was it love and hope?
She couldn't tell, because the whole world seemed light-years away and all she could see was him.
Maybe she really did love him.
And Bella would never know but standing there watching and going unnoticed was her sort of beautiful friend.
*
She looks at her reflection in the mirror, and not her beautifully curved body or her perfectly angled features could distract her from the only thing she saw in that reflection.
Her eyes were blood red, and its ironic she thinks.
She once thought that it might have been everything she ever wanted,
But she looks outside and sees a certain boy taking a second glance at her 2nd story window.
He hasn't changed, but she has and maybe he doesn't want to see her that way. And so she watches him walk away.
And she fights the need to scream his name or run after him.
She turns around to see the bronze haired angel walk through the door and come to envelope her in his arms and as she stares in those Golden, Topaz,
Amber eyes she remembers something from a long time ago.
Brown was always her favourite colour.
