A Lot to Take In

Walter set his keys on the counter in a daze.

Paige slowly walked into the garage and sat on the dark leather couch, taking a deep breath. She watched him carefully, unsure if she should speak first.

Walter seemed to be lost in thought, he was frozen in place with an odd blank look. After a handful of long seconds, he turned around to face her.

She raised her eyebrows, finding it difficult to read his mixed expression. She stayed silent.

"Wow," Walter coughed, "This is a lot to take in."

Paige smiled softly, "I know sweetie," she patted a pillow next to her, "Come sit down, you're looking a bit pale."

Walter returned the smile and gently sat down next to her. He carefully placed his hand on her pregnant belly, "I just can't believe it."

Paige placed her hand on top of his, "Are you nervous? You've kind of been a bit... um, distracted ever since we got back from the doctor."

He nodded slightly staring at her belly.

Paige felt a bit teary-eyed, "Don't get me wrong, I'm happy of course, but I mean what are the odds right? I just want the best for our baby."

Walter stood up abruptly, "I do too. So I'm gonna read every book there is. Of course, I'm nervous about having a baby girl, I know very little about girls. But she will need me so I will-we will do our very best! So no need to be nervous. Right sweetie?"

Paige blinked, "Wait. You're nervous that it's a girl?"

"I won't be nervous after diligent research. I'll learn what barbies are, and how to braid hair, and ... oh no, I can't think of anything else. I better start studying as soon as possible."

Paige burst into tears, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry"

Walter sat next to her in a panic, "What did I say? Whatever it is I didn't mean it. I just say things sometimes."

Paige starting laughing through her tears, "I thought you were upset..."

"Why would you think that?"

She twisted her fingers. "Well, you know... The doctor said that there is a chance our baby might have Down syndrome and I thought... that made you upset."

Walter didn't say anything which made Paige cry even more.

Walter wrapped her in a hug, "Of course I'm not upset. To be honest I was a bit relieved. I may not know how to interact with normal people but I'm around special people all the time. She would fit right in."

Paige rubbed her eyes, "She would fit right in," she repeated grinning.

Walter stood up, he was too anxious to sit still, "I'm going to make you lunch, what do you want?"

She looked at him in amusement, "You're going to cook? So my choices are pasta, spaghetti or toast?

Walter was already making lots of noise in the kitchen, "Pasta it is!"

So I don't know how I got the idea for this story, it seems pretty random but I think it would be cool if this actually happened in the show. which will never happen which is why I brought it to life in the fan fiction world.
