If someone asked me in the beginning, what I thought about Dr. Rodney McKay, the response they would have gotten would be that he is a self-absorbed, egotistical, narcissistic, pampas jackass who has the social skills of a rabid porcupine.
But that was then and this is now, and if asked the same question, I would have to recant on my previous answer. After numerous missions with the man, I have come to realize that Rodney is dedicated, hard working, and sometimes selfless, often putting himself in compromising situations that risk both life and limb. And yes, while he may rub a lot of people the wrong way, when it comes down to it, he deeply cares about the people closest to him.
As I lay here in bed with the soft sound of his snores floating past my ears, I can not help but wonder what I did to deserve someone who cares so deeply about me. It is truly remarkable, and I am thankful that I and all my military bravado summoned up enough courage to take the first step in having a relationship with this wonderful man.
Under normal circumstances, I would be subjected to the "Don't ask. Don't tell" policy, but we are in the Pegasus galaxy and circumstances are far from normal here. When Rodney was finally comfortable with letting other people know about us, we started out with just telling a few people. Elizabeth was the first person we told, but I suspect that she knew all along. Eventually we let it slip to Teyla, Ronon, Carson, and Zelenka and asked them to keep it quiet for now.
I am disrupted from my thought when Rodney's nose nuzzles against my neck and I here him murmur.
"John, go to sleep, I can hear you think and it's keeping my awake." He said into my chest as he drifted off again.
"Ok Rodney." I smiled and snuggled further into the blankets and closer to Rodney.
I sighed once more before falling asleep. Being with Rodney was, by far, one of the greatest things that has ever happened in my life, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
