Author's Note: For those that need a mental refresher on what this episode was about, this is the episode where Scully does a 'routine consultation' in Utah without telling new partner Agent Doggett until she is already there. The investigation into the mysterious death in the desert leads to Scully being kidnapped by a roving cult who believe that a large parasite is the Second Coming. When the latest host fails, the parasite is entered into the unnoticeably pregnant Scully. Doggett arrives, saves her and cuts out the parasite before it reaches her brain. Scully spends a week in the hospital.

Two days after Agent Doggett had come in and saved her from her own idiocy, Agent Scully lay on her hospital bed in Provo, Utah.

Now awake enough post-surgery and -trauma, her hand had not left her abdomen where her unborn child resided, dreading what damage her 'routine consultation' might have had upon her child.

It was the not knowing that was the worst.

With no way of medically finding out if the parasite briefly within her had caused some damage to the still forming foetus, all she knew is that she had a long time to wait – just under eight months to be precise – but never had the prospect of such a duration of time felt so long.

And she missed Mulder.

She wanted someone to hold her hand and tell it was all going to be okay. She wanted someone to hold her tight and provide some comfort and warmth when the cold inevitably came each and every night she was alone.

But she didn't have that. Instead, she had a partnership that was almost over before it began.

'I'm so sorry baby,' she whispered, a sob escaping from her as she looked at her hand resting on her only slightly fuller midsection. 'Mummy's so sorry.'

Sleep was a long time coming, and even then it was restless.

It was a cruel wake up the following morning. Dreams of a warm body behind her and a kiss to her cheeks just the way he always did were banished when she woke up huddled in a ball and gripping the cold crisp hospital sheets around her.

'Come home Mulder,' she whispered desperately into the confines of her dark sterile room, part of her irrationally hoping for a response. 'We need you.'

In the outskirts of the galaxy, Fox Mulder's eyes flew open. Immobilised, he let out a silent scream.

'Scully!'
