She looked in the mirror and saw her black hair cascading down her head like a black waterfall. Her dark makeup ran down her face, also like a waterfall. She glanced out the window at the darkness outside as thunder cracked and rose from her chair. Today was the day, she could feel it. Today was the day she would die.
"Mother!" Cassandra called, banging on her parents' bedroom door. "It's time to go!" Her brother walked past her on his way down the stairs.
"She's already downstairs, stupid." He said to her. She stuck out her tounge in defiance.
Cassandra banged on the door once more and then headed downstairs. Today was her parents' anniversary. She wasn't sure how long they had been married but she knew they were happy and that's all that mattered.
"Come on, children" Her father, Mortimer, said from the archway in the front door. "The cab is here!" He had his cane and suit on specially for the anniversary. He was also wearing a rare smile that Cassandra only saw once a year. The children paused and contemplated their father's happiness.
"Quickly now" Mortimer said, indicating for them to go out the door. "The cab will leave without us!"
The duo walked out the door but Mortimer stopped Cassandra as she reached him. "Where's your mother?" He asked, with minor concern in his voice.
"I thought she was downstairs already" Cassandra replied. Mortimer rolled his eyes and patted Cassandra on the shoulder. He was only ever this nice on this day of the year.
"I'll go get her, she's probably still getting ready" He laughed, Cassandra noticed an inch of worry in his laughter. "Wait here till I get back" He smiled and winked at his daughter.
Cassandra plucked a book from the nearby bookcase and started reading it patiently.
Mortimer appeared at the top of the stairs a few moments later. "Cassandra" He said. The concern in his voice made her look up from her book. Lightning started to flash from outside.
"Yes, father?" She asked
"It's your mother" He said, thunder rumbled mirroring the feeling inside Cassandra's stomach. "She's….gone"
The book landed on the floor with a thud, that was muffled by an enourmous storm from outside.
