Stargazing

Lisa Park used to love looking at the stars.

Often she would spend half her rest periods snuggled up with Ron and Dale on one of the couches on the observation deck. Whether Destiny was in FTL and the stars were mere streaks of light gliding past the giant windows, or whether they were in between jumps and the stars were tiny cold pinpricks of light against the eternally dark velvet sky – the three of them had spent literally hours stargazing together, sometimes tipsy from Brody's hooch which made all the FTL colors look even more psychedelic.

She well remembers the heat off her lovers' bodies shortly after their kidney surgery, as Ron was fighting an infection and Dale was convalescing, and she took care of them both while they watched the stars.

She can no longer see the stars now, but Ron and Dale describe to her what they see, and every so often she sees sparkles behind her eyelids – cosmic radiation striking her burnt retinas with such intensity that they send a signal to her brain despite the damage.

She weeps quietly, then, and her two partners hold her, and she knows despite everything that she is lucky to be alive, and lucky to be loved, and she loves them both so much that even the stars in her memory pale in comparison.
