When the air bender is in the Fire Nation he always visits her at night, some nights, she stays up late because she knows he'll come.
He's not as happy as he used to be, he's matured and realised that the wrongs of the world still exist. Sometimes, when Sokka is also visiting, he questions why Aang is so happy and Zuko make some subtle comment that no one understands and Mai is left hanging her head in shame, the earth bender knows that they know, she doesn't care.
So he comes at night to whisper sweet nothings in her ear and the reality is that's exactly what they are. They're sweet but they mean nothing, Toph knows that, the Avatar will never love her the way she loves him. Sometimes, he whispers that he loves her more then anything and for a moment, she believes him.
Aang can never love anyone but Katara. Toph still doesn't understand why he comes to her, in the dead of night, when he could simply stay in the water tribes with Katara.
Toph never questions Aang about it because if she did, he would stop coming to her, and she really doesn't care if what they're doing is wrong.
Some days, when the Avatar is away, Toph tries to subtly question the Firelord or his lady about it. She knows they understand, they just won't reply unless she's more up front about it.
So the blind bandit is surprised when one night, while he whispers sweet nothings in her ear, she mutters a simple 'why?' For a second he stops and stares at her before making up an excuse to leave, leave her room, leave the Fire Nation.
Toph is left heart broken. She knew what they were doing was wrong; she did not care for moral obligations or right and wrong, but it still heart to know he would never come back.
He did come back; to whisper sweet nothings in her ear and the next day all of the old Gaang were there.
They were shocked when Katara told them all that she and Aang were breaking up, Toph was so worried and then Katara pulled her away from the others. She expected a slap or to be scolded for her lack of morals, so when Katara hugged her and told her it was okay, she was frozen.
"Oh my god," the blind bandit whispered, "you're dying." Then the water bender laughed and left to talk to Suki.
Toph still could not believe that he could ever love her the way she loved him. Every night, the sweet nothings, that had once been her crushing heart ache, became a reassurance. Every night she knew he loved her more then anything. So Toph returned his sweet nothings with whispers of love and forever.
One day, that Avatar and the Blind Bandit would be as admired as the Firelord and his lady. The world's approval was not needed. All Toph ever needed was his sweet nothings.
Author's Note: Um, surprise... Taang! With Maiko.
My first Avatar FanFic ever, that's right, el numero uno. That does mean the number one, right.
